Hey, I'm painting an ork army & I was wondering if anyone had any tips on painting rust?

“Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

I like to use a redish orange wash. Not sure of the GW names anymore, but I think its Blazing orange? you can do different shades of orange and brown. A good tip is to just google some pics of rust for a guide. 1 part paint to about 15 parts water. I use a little mixing medium and flow aid as well.

use an old, stiff brush with the bristles kind of splayed apart and just blot on successively lighter/more orangey shades of brown. If the paint gets lumpy or has some texture to it, it will look even more realistic. A light orange/brown wash in the areas where there would not be alot of moving parts helps as well.

I also reccomend the Forge world weathering powders.
Aged Rust and the other more orangey one. The combination locked in with Lahmein medium works a treat.

Hello,
I use mig pigment standard rust for most of my rust work, I usualy use VMC dessert yellow mixed with liquitex slowdri and cover the areas i want to be rusty to give it a yellow tint to it when thats let to sit for a moment but still wet i mix mig pigment standard rust with alcohol till its grainy looking and liquidy but not smooth or clunky I then take that and spread it on where i want the rust build up to be it will kinda flood the area in this orange rust color but that will go away when the alcohol goes away and when it does youll be left with just the pigment and the yellow showing in the back along with some of the orange color staining it from the pigment
heres a pic of a bit i recently did i sealed it with matte varnish

Nice model. You're a better painter than I.

vallejo pigment colors do the job very well, because its applied with water or alcohol it dries very natural.
also, you could stipple beastial brown mixed with red, then beastial brown and then beastial brown mixed with orange to create a nice rust effect

For a quick way of doing it I use the small drybrush (the Citadel one) and stipple on Scorched Brown, getting fairly good coverage of the area I want to paintlook rusty, then I do the same over that a little more sparsely using Bestial Brown, then stipple very sparingly over the top of that with Macharius Solar Orange. Sometimes it ends up covering more of the surface than I'd like, so then I sparsely stiple on a bit of Boltgun Metal to break it up a bit.

This Ork warboss i did last year I wanted to get a realistic rusty type effect on the power claw so i googled pics of some forestry machinery, they're out in the weather a lot and are powerful hydrolic claws and diggers which i imagined the Ork claw to be like, I mixed a small bit of black with snakebite leather and blazing orange and heavily stippled it over boltgun metal then added more blazing orange and re stippled bout two times getting more orange each time, then i washed it with devlan mud and stippled blazing orange over that sparingly, i then used liquid mask to get the weathered chips and painted it yellow then rubbed the liquid mask back off the reveal the rust i did, after that i just added some more streaks and fine lines of mithrill slver and boltgun metal to show that it was still sharp and dangerous!
hope that's helped a bit?

Looks really good. Better than what I've managed to do so far, think I may have to do a bit more to mine to finish it off.
