So I've been looking at the site and I'm really liking the looks of the models. I've glanced over the rules a few times but frankly I always learn better by actually doing rather then just reading. Anyways after looking at the models I'm heavily leaning towards Ariadna as my starting faction and namely the Caledonian stuff has really caught my eye. So I was wondering if the Caledonian Highlander Army is a good starting point for a new player? Also where to go from there. Thanks for any help in advance.

Now that would be a nice change. Cool looking models (IMO) acctually being useful and playable is something that just might really help convince me to make the plunge.

Get the quickstart rules, proxy models and a friend and try it out first. My first game was with my wife i used 3 guardsmen and space marine my wife used here eldar and we decied to jump in from there. And what i mean buy any model being useful is that a light infantry model with a rifle can critical hit a tag and do some damage.

May as well mention, after some discussion with folks here and on the official forums, I have, in my capacity as purveyor of games, compiled an alternative Ariadna starter.

Instead of the Chasseur it comes with a Scout for some stealthy, scouty, snipery action.

As mentioned all starter boxes are good solid units for beginners ...maybe except for the Hassassins which have irregular troops, a combat drop trooper, and an impersonator.

But to specifically look at the Calcedonian you have....

- 3 regular troops with rifles (which you may later on give limited camo and infiltration...and can link once you get used to the rules)
- an aggressive wulver
- an armored AP HMG guy (WHOA!)
- and a special forces SAS guy (which has newly expanded rules / weapon configs)

You have 6 orders (plus Lt. order), a very solid Special weapon (AP HMG), an aggressive fig (wulver with T2 rifle who can also fight well in close combat ), and fun / tactical infiltrator (SAS)

so YES A GOOD STARTER!

Excellent sounds like a plan to me. Heck I might even have gotten my models by then. I'm pretty sure that as soon as I have the funds I'm gonna be getting that starter pack and rulebook.

So I was playing around with the army list builder. And I noticed that if I did a Caledonian army I can't take tank hunters. Now I'm wondering should I do just a regular Ariadna army or would I be alright doing a Caledonian list and not having a tank hunter at all. Opinions advice? And the going with what I like the looks of won't really help cause I like the looks of most of the models in the range (for all armies).

I'd say starting out you want to do the General Ariadna list rather than the Caledonian. After playing a while you can then decide if you want to do a sectoral list like that.

Excellent advice there - just stay away from Yu-Jing and you'll be fine!

Do like me, start with Vanilla Ariadna, then realise you have enough models to do a little Russian Sectorial (not released yet), a little Merovingian Sectorial and a little Caledonian Sectorial all at same time =P

That sounds good. And actually thinking about it I can lean heavier towards Caledonian units anyways too.

Exactly right. I do Shasvastii but I've since started doing General CA with a bent towards Shasvastii.

Quick question. How do people generally feel about being a point over? Like 201 instead of 200?

That entirely depends on who you play with.

Personally, I'd say if you don't draw the line at the arranged limit, where do you draw it?

I might be a bit more flexible about it in a casual game - I'd let a point or two go if it was for some cool reason (letting someone use their newly finished model or something), but if it was just to take a 2 point upgrade, I'd say no.

I'd say no to going over in points. Maybe i'm tainted by the official forum but it was one of the first things i was told and there was no manoeuvring on it according to everyone i talked to.

Of course, i wouldn't be annoyed if a friend wanted to run a list that was a point or two over.

It's all right I figured out where I could drop a point and still take the same models. The new list is looking like this -

That list looks like fun man. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I'm planning a Caledonian Sectorial myself but i'm just going to do it as modelling and painting project to start with.

Ya this is gonna be my intial list for starting out the game. Later on I want to do a Caledonian Sectoral list too.

Have you thought about a theme or fluff for them yet? For example, my Caledonians are going to be 'Clan Thomson.' They are a band of Dog sympathisers who use loads of hybrids in their military.

No I haven't at all. Right now I'm more picking stuff by the rule of cool more then anything. I actually haven't read the fluff at all. I've read through the rules and love them so far. So I decided to go ahead and take the plunge using a little of my birthday money that I've got before being a responsible adult with it all.

I've been seeing that so far. I gotta say I'm already liking the idea that any model can be useful. Finally I can actually pick something up cause I love the model and not have to worry later on if it's gonna be useful at all.

It's one of the best things about Infinity. No sacrifices need to be made to run a cool model.
