A guy at my FLGS plays SW. In his army, he generally runs Wolf Guards as troops which I guess is possible using Logan Grimnar as an HQ. What he does, is separates the squad and makes them all lead other units and claims that since his Wolf Guard are "troops" then any unit they "lead" now becomes a scoring troops unit as well. Is this true? It sounds totally wrong to me and seems ridiculous if it is true.

NO this sounds like arse to me. A WG can join a troops selection and from then on be part of said troops choice, even if the rest of the squad dies he can claim.
In your situation it appears he has it backwards. WG are the same type of unit they are leading. So a WG on a bike leading swiftcalw bikers is a FA model etc etc.
Grimnar makes WG a troops choice.

So if a Wolf Guard unit is broken up to be battle leaders for various units, they lose their scoring ability unless they lead an actual Troops unit? Ok that makes sense. Much more so than the way my friend plays it. I'll be sure to let him know he's mistaken. Thanks.

INdeed, a WG that is part of a troops selection is a scoring model.
Be cool with him about it, just ask him to show you where he is getting it from and show him the faq. Remember is's a permissive rule set so you have to be able show permission to do something to do it.

Fortunately he's a good friend of mine and he's said himself it's a really cheesy rule and shouldn't be in the codex. He'll have no problem learning it's incorrect

SW FAQ p5 deals with this situation specifically, as well as a few others. The WG pack leader simply becomes part of the unit for all intents and purposes, so will lose his scoring status when he joins a non-scoring unit (and likewise gains scoring status if he joins a scoring unit).
