Industrial Wasteland Basing Tutorial- Perfect for Infinity
On the arrival of my first lot Infinity miniatures (of which I'm am quite Impressed), I decided I'd do something different for my bases. I Imagined the kind of look that I wanted; A Post Apocalyptic Industrial Wasteland type look... And then it just grew from there. After trying my idea out on many test pieces and with many failures (I burnt my first piece with my desk lamp ), I slowly started to hone my idea into a good looking base.
Basically my Idea for the bases includes three sections; Pavement, Curb and Road. All of the bases will consist of at least one of these parts, but for variety's sake they can't all have the same combination of the three.
So without further ado here is the step by step tutorial...
Stuff you'll Need... - Plastic Glue - PVA (White) Glue - Modelling Sand - Spare lengths of Spure - Paints and Paintbrushes - Plastic card- Rod (aprox.2mm in Diameter) and Sheet (aprox.2mm thick) - Clippers - Modelling Knife - Hobby Files - Hobby Drill
How to do it...
STEP 1-Glue the base to a sheet of plasticard (aprox.2mm) and trim/file the edges so that they're flush.
STEP 2-Clip off a length of spare spure and glue to the base like so. (this is the Curb).
STEP 3-Now this doesn't show up well in the pic but in this step I basically defaced the Pavement part of the base. I used a knife, files and a hobby drill.
STEP 4-Apply some modelling sand to the base in a similar fashion as the pic below. Just remember that one side is the Pavement and the other side is the road. The road needs finer sand to give it a tarmac look (leaving the optional space for pools of toxic sludge) and the Pavement just needs bits of rubble and dirt here and there.
STEP 5 (Riveting) -After damaging the Curb a little I decided to add rivets to it. I don't know why a Curb would have Rivets but I just felt that they would look good there.
1- Drill a hole in the sprue the same diameter as the Plastic Rod.
2- Glue the rods into the holes and roughly trim to size.
3- Make sure glue is fully dry from last step (otherwise this step will be difficult) and then file the rivets down together until they sit together at the desired level.
Now that it's built...Time to paint!
Sorry for the lack of WIPs...
Curb. - Undercoat VG Black - Layer 1:1 VG Cold Grey and VG Black. - Drybrush Cold Grey - Add Metallic scratches with VG Black under Citadel Boltgun Metal. - Rivets were painted Citadel Boltgun Metal. - Wash with watered down Citadel Badab Black.
Pavement. - Wash with really thinned down VG Black. - Wash with really thinned down VG Charred Brown or Citadel Devlan Mud.
Toxic Sludge - Basecoat 3:4 Citadel Goblin Green and VG Charred Brown. - Layer Blend 1:1 Citadel Goblin Green and VG Charred Brown. - Layer Blend 2:1 Citadel Goblin Green and VG Charred Brown. - Pick out some bits with pure Citadel Goblin Green. - Layer Citadel Gloss Varnish.
Blood Spill. - Layer really thinned 1:3 VG Black and VG Gory Red. - Layer pure VG Gory Red - Layer Citadel Gloss Varnish.
Seal the whole thing with thinned Matte Varnish. (Obviously before painting the gloss onto the wet parts).
And That's it. I Hope at least Someone found this helpful!
Thanks for Looking!
Flying Pooo.

"Whilst we stand, we fight. Whilst we fight, we prevail. Nothing shall stay our wrath" Guilliman and the Ultramarines are like Manchester United, everyone hates them because they are so awesome!
