I haven't played a game since 2nd edition. Have recently got back into 40k. I sold all my models when I was younger so I'm pretty much using everything that's painted in this list. I might get a few Rhinos if I can fit them in by removing something.
So, without further adoo!
HQ - 175pts
Wolf Lord - 175pts
Terminator armour, frost blade, melta bombs, saga of the beastslayer, Fenrisian Wolf
ELITES - 523pts
Wolf Guard x6 293pts
WG1: Plasma pistol, frost blade (joins Blood Claws)
WG2: Terminator armour, frost blade
WG3: Terminator armour, assault cannon, chainfist
WG4: Terminator armour, wolf claw x2
WG5: Terminator armour, wolf claw
WG6: Terminator armour, wolf claw
Dreadnought - 105pts
Multi-melta
Lone Wolf - 65pts
Plasma pistol, thunder hammer
TROOPS - 300pts
Grey Hunters x 10 - 150pts
Flamer, plasma gun
Blood Claws x 9 - 150 pts
Power weapon
What do you think? Will I do well, or get owned? What would you change?
Also, am I correct in reading that I get the plasma gun in the Grey Hunter squad for free because there are 10 of them? Or does "no extra cost" mean I still have to pay the normal cost, just no EXTRA cost?
62pts to spare. Hmmm.

You have to pay for the first special, the second one is free.
You are better off taking a rune priest for your hq.
Your dread is not going to cost that much.

I'd drop the Blood Claws and replace them with Grey Hunters. They are pretty much better in every aspect. Yes they don't get the +2 attacks on the charge but they also don't get hit on 3+s by most units while in combat either.
I'd probably drop the Wolf Lord and get a Rune Priest with Chooser of the Slain, and then 2 of Living Lightning, JOTWW and Murderous Hurricane. Cheaper and will probably be a bit more effective.
I'd also be tempted to drop a few Wolf Guard, that's a lot there for a 1000pt list. I'd drop the one that will join the Blood Claws, so that you can swap them for a 9-man squad of Grey Hunters and then you can put the Rune Priest in there. I'd probably also drop Wolf Guard 6 as well.
I also think that you need some long range firepower in there. Maybe a couple of squads of Long Fangs with Missile Launchers, of course, you'll probably have to try and find some more points, maybe dropping the Lone Wolf.
Hope this is useful.

You could free up 20 points by not giving the Wolf Guard single wolf claws, they draw no benefit from a single one, with the points you could add a Mark of the Wulfen to the Grey hunters, always points well spent imho

Since you're playing with the models you already have painted, I'm assuming it's too late to change "Frost Blades" into Wolf claws. Wolf claws are not only superior to Frost Blades ( WC wound T4 models 75% of the time, while FB wound T4 models 66% of the time), but they are 5 points cheaper too.
The frost blades are a waste of points. This is just my opinion, so take it with the necessary amount of salt, but I would just take every frost blade in the army and call it a power weapon instead. That will get you 10 points times how every many FB's you have. (= 30 points?) Use it to buy a rhino.

Disagree. Wolf Claws allow you to choose to either re-roll to hit or re-roll to wound. That re-roll is DRAMATICALLY more effective than both a WTN (if you choose to re-roll to hit) and a frost blade (if you choose to re-roll to wound).
Plus, having the option to choose which one you want to re-roll gives you a lot of flexibility. For example, if you are fighting an independent character with a high weapon skill, you can choose to re-roll to hit - giving you a 75% chance to hit with each attack instead of 50%. But on the other hand, if you're fighting against a monstrous creature (or something) with a high toughness, you can choose to re-roll to wound. In that case, if you normally needed 6+ to wound for each hit (16.6% chance) then with the re-roll you improve to a 30.5% chance. That's almost as good as wounding on a 5+.
Finally, with one wolf claw you can still shoot your storm bolter! Why add a second WC for 10 points to get one extra attack in CC, when you could spend 5 points and get a combi-weapon instead - or no points and keep your storm bolter?

How do they draw no benefit by themselves? This makes no sense. Re-rolls are re-rolls, you don't need 2 of them to get the re-roll benefit. It's basically a power sword that can be re-rolled added to the stormbolter, that's not something to drop on a whim unless you're trying to make a point limit. Automatically Appended Next Post: As for the army modifications:
The Lord
-Drop the Frost Blade & Wolf Hound
+Add Wolf Claw instead and if you're keeping him inplace of a Rune Priest give him the Wolf Tail Talisman to give your army some anti-psyker ability.
Wolf Guard
-Drop the Blood Claws WG altogether
Dreadnought
+Add TL Lascannon & Missile Launcher pod, you don't have enough long range fire support, this will help, keep him at max range as much as possible and use his immense 48" range to your advantage.
Lone Wolf
-Drop him (you'll need his pts for the Dreadnought change.
Blood Claws
-Convert them to Grey Hunters with a Meltagun, Standard (atleast, if you have more points Rhino, if you max it to 10, a second free meltagun.)
If you can finagle the points in some way (and have the units or can buy them) add an all missile squad of Long Fangs. They would help support your dreadnought in the long range fire department greatly.
These suggestions are keeping with what you already have and not completely converting it, since it sounds like you may not be looking to buy a whole new army.
As always, best of luck to you.

Thanks for the input guys! I will drop the Blood Claws WG, and the lone wolf. Wolf Tail Talisman sounds like a good Idea.
It's a bit late to cut up all my Blood Claws and give them bolters. I just don't want to. Besides, variety is the spice of life. The Dread is the assault on black reach one with wolfy bits stuck on him, If I want lascannons and missile pod I'll have to buy a whole new Dread. I love my doggy and won't let him go! lol. Only 10 pts anyhow, and basically gives the Lord another wound (not something to sniff at).
I will use some of the points to get a Rhino. Not sure what I'll do about long range firepower. I do have an old Predator Annihilator. Anyone know how to convert a 2nd edition pred turret so it turns? Also, does the Wolf tooth necklace help melta-bombs to hit walkers? Automatically Appended Next Post: Whoa... I just looked up the Wolf tooth necklace melta bombs vs dreds thing. 3 threads, all very heated and inconclusive. I'll just leave it alone until 6th edition. Hopefully it'll get cleared up then.

As grey hunters carry both bolters and bolt pistols and chainswords at the same time you wouldnt have to cut anything up. You could run them as grey hunters as is. Blood Claws still have their place, but to get the most out of Blood Claws you need to run them in larger packs with a Wolf Priest to lead them.

The problem I have with these choices is that they aren't as mobile, and you aren't doing your self any favors in other styles of fighting that isn't annihilation. You need rhinos and razorbacks to scoot around the map and claim objectives. Also the lonewolf seems really alone without terminator armor or fenrisian wolves to soak up hits.

Noticed that one myself yesterday after reading up on something else, someone who's normally pretty solid on rules told me I'd need a pair for rerolls, so I never questioned that, sorry for any confusion caused

What he said. I especially like the the part about the Wolf Priest.
It's a lot of points, but for a big fun game I like to take a unit of 15 Blood Claws with two flamers and a power weapon, atttach a stock Wolf Priest in power armor and put them in a Land Raider Crusader.
I know it's a huge point sink so not really recommended for competetive games, but it's perfectly in character with the space wolves and very killy in close combat.

Not a problem. We all make mistakes. I just wasn't sure where you were coming from. Oh well, it's in the past.
I looked up the vanilla lightning claws as well and they don't require to be paired to get the re-roll, granted they're only re-roll to wound where as the SW are re-roll to hit or wound. So I don't know where he got those rules from, I was hoping it was just a mix up, but now I don't know. My favorite variant of this (which is a little less point intensive and there for a bit easier to field) is 9 Blood Claws + Wolf Priest in either a Rhino or Drop pod with a Power Weapon. I just love the amount of attacks they can put out. However, I agree it's alot more fluffy then competitive, but it sure is fun!

Here is my standard 1000 SW list. It plays well and is pretty versatile. Has firepower, mobile, GH pack punch with CA & Wolf Standard, and the Dreadnought w/ MM getting behind enemy lines on first turn w/ DP wrecks havoc. Not to mention the wolf tail talisman always hits on 3+ in CC, it's pretty mean.
