Hello Dakka!

I recently aquired a space wolves codex and a squad of grey hunters, but being inexperienced in the feild of forming an army of space wolves( no one at my LGS plays them), I decided to pose the question to you...

What should I buy first? And how should I form my squad of Grey Hunters? I am leaning in the direction of 2 plasmas... but let me know your thoughts.

Cheers!

Be aware that the Space Wolves box doesn't have a meltagun or a flamer. So if you want to have special weapons in your squad AND you have to use the bits from this box, then plasmaguns is your only choice. I prefer to put meltaguns on my guys, but that's just a personal preference.

However, here are some suggestions that you may want to consider that will give you the option to field any combination and still be WYSIWYG.

When you build your models, make sure that exactly one has a standard (backpack flag thingy) and one has a power weapon (I like the sword, because making the axe two-handed leaves no room for a bolter). That way, when you play this squad, you can choose to take the squad with a standard and it will be WYSIWYG, or you can decide not to take the standard and it will just be a pretty thing on his back. Likewise for the PW.

Next, only build 8 guys as Grey Hunters. For those, paint the left shoulder pad yellow and add the great company decal. Paint the individual pack marking (distinguish one squad from another) on the right shoulder pad in red and black.

For the 9th mini, you want the option of having Mark of the Wulfen. This could be as simple as choosing one of the bald heads for this guy and painting a tatoo on his face. On my MotW guys, I build the mini as I normal but use the arms and head from a Chaos Maruader horseman box. Those heads are more ferocious looking an the bare arms with rough axes distinguishes him from the other guys in the squad. Again, as long as you glue a bolter to his belt, you can either take MotW in the squad and this will be the model for it or you can just make him another dude. This gives you the option and either way you're WYSIWYG.

The 10th mini you should build as a wolfguard pack leader. How you do this depends on your skill level as a modeller. I like to magnetize the arms on my wolf guard so that I can change out wargear from game to game. That way, I can either make him a WG pack leader with good stuff like a power fist and combi-weapon, or I can just throw on a bolter and chainsword and he's a plain old Grey Hunter again.

To do that, you need a pin-vice with a stock drillbit, some 3/32 in magnets and a 3/32 in drill bit. it's a lot easier than it sounds.

You can distinguish the WG from a GH by painting the right shoulder pad with the pack marking in yellow and black instead of red and black.

Just buy the pack of meltas, or even better the missile launcher+melta pack off forge world.
You want to build long fangs using some of the parts you are collecting they want missile launchers.

8 grey hunters with standard, mark, powerweapon, melta with the wolf guard with fist and combimelta is fairly standard as it is dead killy; whilst being fluffy having lots of different models. In a rhino.

In a razorback just keep them cheap maybe a flamer or melta.

You can a HQ with the parts as well. I would actually recommend though going for a rune priest.

Also you can build wolf scouts which are pretty cool, their set up is a little weird so it is personal taste to their weapons.

Have fun doing all the modelling

Meh....You can't build a list without troops. Grey Hunters are the best troops in the game. You can build your HQ's later after you've figured out how to paint space wolves.

When i started my space wolves army i went with 40 grey hunters and 4 rhinos. I have 2 squads with 2 meltas and 2 squads with 2 plasma and i always have a wolf standard and Mark of wulfen, In my opinion the wolf standard is a must and then on the HQ side of things i would probably buy the rune priest as they are amazing for their point cost. The obvious HS choice is the long fangs squads as they are so cheap and brilliantly effective. Hope that helps
