Well another E3 is chugging on but that really got me thinking, what is the point these days on E3? I found a little article on Gamestop talking about it and I think there is some truth to the matter

http://www.gamespot.com/features/e3-not-what-it-used-to-be-6379815/

I mean theres still plenty of other shows now compared to back then (such as PAX), Youtube can also be an easy way to reach your audiences (Beth revealed one of their new games), companies are also big/popular enough not to need this type of advertisement, etc.

I mean I remember all the joy and agony from the news press. One of my favorite web cartoons even had an episode based on E3

However now these days it doesnt have to be early summer to get news. It happens almost daily now

Is the magic now gone from the expo?

That magic's been gone for a long time now. If you'd look at MS conference, you'd never guess E3 was about games.

Gamescom is where it's at these days, as far as games for gamers go.

It hasn't had relevance for years. E3 is mostly a Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo thing. No one cares anymore, especially when Microsoft and Sony don't do anything interesting.

Tokyo Game Show and Gamescon over took it ages ago.

All the announcments, barring Watch Dogs, were utterly predicatable and most of them are FPS sequels.

I don't always agree with John Walker but this basically sums up my feelings about E3 and the 'public face of gaming'. http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/06/05/e3s-press-events-do-not-represent-the-gaming-i-know/#more-110809

PAX and gamescon are probably better tehse days.

E3 is mostly for console based games.

"The Imperium is nothing if not willing to go to any lengths necessary. So the Trekkies are zipping around at warp speed taking small chucks out of an nigh-on infinite amount of ships, with the Imperium being unable to strike back. feth it, says central command, and detonates every vortex warhead in the fleet, plunging the entire sector into the Warp. I wouldn't say that. Its mostly for the Console Makers and the publishers. It hasn't been focused on developers for a long time, so it ends up being more like a industry survey than a games convention.

It used to be like the International Airshow, which is about company's show casing new designs and airplanes, but now it's more of a model gallery for "Whats next".

Realistically there isn't much of a point for developers to shop around their pet projects outside the indie conventions. Its cheaper to get exposure online while shopping your game directly to publishers.

Yep. Internet and shifts in marketing practices took the devs out of E3, and now instead we get to enjoy the latest news on Kinect and... Who are we kidding that's not enjoyable at all.

It's not supposed to be a 'games convention'.

It's supposed to be an industry convention with the audience being the media.

It is now. Back in the 90's and early 00's though developers were common at E3, as were average joes going in to see displays and play with demos. I think they still have some of that, but since about 2005 or so E3 got smaller, and became a nearly strictly media affair. Of course, back in the 90's and early 00's there were the only show in town. There are other larger events now like PAX and Gamescon which are more like what E3 was a decade ago. EDIT: I suppose the app term is trade fair, but w/e XD

I got a good laugh outta this. Valve should do there own game show for sure.

Back on subject, E3 has kinda suffered I think because I think games in general have suffered, so they kinda have to fill in the empty spaces with things NOT related to games.

I think Valve has that event practically every day with their Steam announcements, but YMMV.

Other than Nintendo I agree. Well, I liked the WiiU set, but their 3DS/handheld set was just terrible. I only thought 2 games were going to be good, and I already knew about them, Luigis Mansion and Super Mario Bros 2. Other then that, everything (Minus Watchdogs, WOW!!) was just dull and I didnt care about it.

It's funny, I was thinking that same thing. I remember when E3 was more than showing new levels for games we know are coming out. Heck, most of the stuff was announced BEFORE E3 started.

Don't know about you, but that kinda kills it for me.

Valve don't need to bother with a convention, their in house output isn't sufficent to warrant an annual show and given how good they are at viral marketing they have no need for one anyway.

Honestly, Valve probably has the lowest output of product of any developer in the industry.

How's Half-Life 3 coming along again?
