I'm not talking about the area underneath your post, I'm talking about people who feel the need to write their name (or some form of it) at the end of each and every post they make.

Some of the other forums I visit consider these types of sigs spam, and I can see why. What exactly is the reason behind it? If I really cared who you were, I would simply look to see you forum name. The system Dakka has is ideal - the little signature box underneath your post is where you can write what you like, and it will be consistent and remain with every post you make, and if you find that irritating, you can disable them in your settings.

I don't fully understand the value or meaning behind it, but I feel that sometimes it interferes with the flow of the forum, and is sometimes confusing when it can be mistaken as part of the post body itself.

This thread is not geared toward any particular members, so please don't involve anyone specific, unless it is yourself.

What is your take on this? And if you do it, why do you it?

Found it odd the first few times, generally just skim it now anyway. I suppose to them it's a more formal way of posting, making it somewhat like a letter.

Much like bronies, I think it's odd and I'm not sure why people do i but it doesn't bother me in any way.

It's like people who refer to themselves in third person.

Annoying, but you can usually ignore them.

More annoying are those that put their W/L/D stats down as if it is something that is interesting to anyone else.

(I don't keep track of mine, because I don't even care about them.)

Just wanted to re-emphasise that, as a couple of chaps seem to have missed it.

I find it oddly irritating when people finish their post with their name. I can't tell why, but it just irks me.

EDIT: Oh, one exception. I like it when Panic signs his posts, since it always reads as an instruction to me. Panic!

Dear Sir or Madam,

There's not many regular users who do it.

I like JB's spin on it, where every post ends with this:

Panic has confused me more than a few times. I see his "Panic" and think it's an instruction, then re-read his post to try and figure out what's so terrifying.

I do sort of like it, to be honest. It feels a bit more formal and well-thought-out. But, I think if you're adding a signature, you really need to add a greeting.

Respectfully,
Grakmar

Salutations NoBaconz4You,

I hope this letter finds you well. How is the family and your affairs? Life on the estate is ever daunting. We had two servants trampled in the streets the other day. To think, they didn't have the good God-given sense to step out of way of that carriage, and good help is so hard to find these days!

Upon your most interesting topic of signatures, I must admit that I find your notice of them alarming. Frankly, it sounds like you are engaging in some kind of rebellious breach of propriety not unlike what is being taught to the young people by those sophists who call themselves men of Science and Arts. I would prepare a fuller discourse upon the topic, but I fear that I might be belabouring the point, whatever that might happen to be. I've been instructed to refrain from such behaviour, sadly, as it might negatively affect my humours.

Best and Most Sincere of Valedictions,

Yeah, signing your post beyond the auto-signature is just weird. I turn off sigs on the forum for a reason.

d-usa does not mind signatures at the end of the posts.

He thinks that it is a most excellent way give a post meaning and signify that it has ended.

He is amused by the question as well.

I was trying to imply that it's a throwback to formal writing. Didn't mean any particular offense at you; only referenced you because you were the one asking the question, and it would be improper to not have a salutation addressing you.

It both confuses and Annoys me. To me, by putting a little flourish you're trying to show how weighty and Influential your posts are. Even if they aren't.

I think if say Manchu, legoburner or Yakface did it i would let it go, as lets face it, their posts are weighty and influential.

EDIT, ive actually reconsidered my opinion, You have to Earn the right. I'd say Panic has earnt it.

I will point out that in certain settings, people are "required" to finish a post in that manner...

When I was taking online college course, I had to "formally" address the class or people within it (if i was responding to a post) and then finish with a formal ending....

I doubt that it stems purely from this, but I'm sure that there are some who may have gotten used to doing things that way, and just keep on doin it.

Oh yeah, sure. When I write emails to clients, I have to begin with a salutation and end with some sort of valediction, per standard rules for writing formal letters.

I think it's just a style thing whether most people turn it off in an obviously casual situation.
