When you have two special characters that have the combat tactics special rule it states that you must pick which on applies. My question is if you only have one special character can you choose to ignore the special characters combat tactics for the vanilla combat tactics.

This is regarding Tyberos The Red Wake where it states "then all units in your army exchange the combat tactics special rule for....."

It depends on the working. I think some SCs have 'may exchange', but your guy seems like it is a must, so, well, its a must.

I think you're mixing up Combat Tactics and Chapter Tactics

All marines have Combat Tactics. Certain special characters have Chapter Tactics, which in some cases swaps Combat Tactics for some other rule. If you have mulitple types of Chapter Tactics in your army, you choose which one applies.


If you just have one character who has a rule that says you exchange Combat Tactics for something else, then you don't have a choice.

Yeah, combat tactics just let you choose to fail a LD test. The only people who give that up are Blood Angels, really, who replace it with 'the red thirst'

Several of the Codex: SM special characters swap Combat Tactics for other rules, as I just mentioned..

Only regular Codex Marines get Combat Tactics. None of the other SM codices get it.

I have just read through most the special HQs that have Chapter Tactics and none of them say "may". If you have one of these gentlemen, you will lose Combat Tactics.

Note that this also means that if you take Marneus Calgar and any of those characters, you lose the benefit of Calgar's God of War (aside from on Calgar himself) as he doesn't have Chapter Tactics... the other character's Chapter Tactics will automatically kick in.
