Hi Dakka,

The names Box and well I dropped out of 40k a couple years ago, but with the coming of 6th ed and school being out I feel that I should get back to my Guard who have been growing dust on the shelves.

My main question is where do I start? Like basic builds and good units to start building or buying?

Krieg! What a hole...

What's good in 5ed might not be good in 6ed, vice versa, might want to wait till the 6ed is officially out.

If you have a couple of Guard on the shelves then odds are you'll already have a Leman Russ Battle Tank or five. That's a fairly safe start to build up a list around, as I highly doubt 6e is going to nerf the unit which has been the mainstay of Imperial Guard armies since nearly day one. But you never know...

6th edition is *most* likely coming out early June. I would wait until then to restart. There is talk of tuning down tanks so maybe wait on buying those Leman's

Just wait. Paint what you have, build scenery, read, or otherwise get excited about the game, but don't buy anything until you've actually looked at the 6e rules... there's a lot of rumors flying around, so basing your army on them isn't a sound idea.

While I agree with all of this, I don't necessarily think you need to take a total break.

Both mech guard and foot guard will, in some form or another be reasonably viable. If there's one style that you really want to do, then you don't have to wait for 6th ed to work on that style some more. If you run a foot horde, for example, it's not like you won't be making use of more dudes with lasguns, and a few chimera chassis are unlikely to go to waste.

Alternately, if there's something that you always wanted your guard army to have, but have never gotten around to it, now might be the time. If, for example, you always wanted ogryn or rough riders or a couple extra russes, you could work on those over the next month while waiting for what the rules will do to your core units.

Boxhead, did you used to play Planetside? I remember a TR player named Boxhead on Emerald.

As for the topic at hand, if you take a little time now to paint some Guardsmen and a tank or two you'll get your chops up to speed for when the new edition drops.

Remember you can never have to many Leman Russ's or Manticores.

"The Imperium is nothing if not willing to go to any lengths necessary. So the Trekkies are zipping around at warp speed taking small chucks out of an nigh-on infinite amount of ships, with the Imperium being unable to strike back. feth it, says central command, and detonates every vortex warhead in the fleet, plunging the entire sector into the Warp. Enjoy tentacle-rape, Kirk, we know Sulu will." -Terminus

"This great fortress was a gift to the Blood Ravens from the legendary Imperial Fists. When asked about it Chapter Master Pugh was reported to say: "THEY TOOK WHAT!?""

Well i say Star off with a battle force of any imperial guard regiment. I basicly use Cadia as my main regiment. Then go get 2 battle tanks and a punisher(killing hords). Possibly a Demolisher also. Then get the 2 more sentinels for meat shields and to also take out some of your enemies troops and vehicles. You might need to get a Basiliks for helping your guardsmen out in the field of battle to shorten out the enemies troops. and dont for get to get chimeras for your troops also. For me i use Vendettas and chimeras as transport. a vendetta is a Valkyrie with 3 lascannons.
Then some other time get a Hydra if your facing an opponenet that uses vehicles that do flatout moving. Then you should also get 1 Mandicore and a deathstrike when playing APOCALYPSE to wreak hell on your enemies .

I hope that this helps you alot because i started playing with a battle force and started getting more stuff. Plus I also recomment that you get a Hellhound when facing hord armies .

Hellhounds are great tanks, even against small elite armies. They can so reliably put down wounds on models in a group, and Marine players won't likely be expecting it as a threat since it isn't AP3.

I'd advise the OP here to continue building guard based on their plans for their guard army, rather than what other people think are their favorite units (especially when their choices are highly dubious, competitively speaking).

If you want to run more infantry, then buy more infantry. If you want to run more mech, buy more chimeras. Don't bother with the battleforce unless you mean to make use of most of everything in said box.
