I've been wondering what the "standard" rate for a Games Workshop tournament entry is. Likewise how much prize support is given out. My local game store generally charges about $10 per person for either Warhammer or Warhammer 40k events and gives out around $150 in prizes each time. Kinda wondering if this is standard practice?

GMI in Riverside usually does $15-20 entry fees for prize support.

Essentially, stores use the tourney as both advertising(getting people in the store) and as a sale(prize support paid by entry fees).

The game store that I have been to for tourneys is $10 cash for entry, or $20 if you buy merchandise. I much prefer this, as I almost always buy something over $20 when I'm there.

That's a cool idea.

I usually see $15-20 entries. Occasionally $10.

The FLGS in the Philadelphia area all run a variety of events.
Example:

A 1 day, 3-4 round GW event might be $10-15. Some do a credit system, where you are paying money, but getting some credit to use at the shop that day

Some of the FLGS have GT's which are multiple days. These are often $30-40 based on size, location, and style of event. However, most of of these off you food / water for the day. If you look at what your probably going to pay for food / beverage in the location, your usually looking at $10 for lunch. So figure your already saving on lunch there.. and its usually better (showcase)

There are multiple shops that offer WMHD events. My experience is these are around $10. Typical size is about 35-50 pts armies, and these are anywhere from 4-6 rounds pending size.

On a boat, Trying not to die.

Usually entry at my FLGS is 5 bucks.

Low entry fees and lower prize pools makes it a hell of a lot less competitive, and more fun.

I organize a monthly campaign at my FLGS and charge $5 per player. After a month using the planetary empires tiles with some slightly modified rules (to fit our local meta), the player or team with the most territories wins the pot + 20% thanks to the store chipping in. We do a $15 sportsmanship prize as well, voted on at the end by all the players who participated. It's taken off very well and been what I would consider successful.

I imagine for a tournament where you'd like to award 3 prizes, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, a $5 buy in would result in a much lower prize pool. $10 wouldn't be unreasonable as long as everybody who participated was on board for a pay-to-play event.

Been out of the game for awhile, trying to find time to get back into it.

Every RTT I've played at this year has been $10 entry, with $120-150 in prize support depending on attendance...I've played at 6 venues, so that seems to be the local standard to me (here in Michigan). I'd really prefer to see a merch-for-entry system like Lormax mentioned though. I always end up making my money back anyway, but it'd be nice not to stand to "lose" anything.

At the local store here in my area:

40K/WHFB/WM-H/ tournaments, FREE!!!!! Yes, free. To play on tables there at the store, free also. I don't think I would play where I have to "rent" a table.

Is the store footing the prizes for tournaments or are you all just playing for bragging rights? Just curious.

I would never play anywhere where I had to rent table space regularly either.

$10-15.

Oh and with few exceptions, I prefer 100% to prize tourneys. This means that all of the entry fees go into the prizes that are handed out at the end.

$10 for a small, in-store tourney with minimal prize support. About $30 if the venue is someplace else.

I usually charge 15 bucks for a 1 day tournament, and it comes with lunch. Prizes vary a bit by attendance.

Example: Last weekend we had 36 show up for 40k. I cooked up sirloin slices in aujus for sandwhiches, supplied bottled water, some fruit, and pretzels. 5 bucks per person budget. The other 10 bucks went towards prizes. We handed out 300 and something in prizes, mostly in store credit.

GT's run 30-60 dollars for a two day event, and the price depends on prizes, trophies, food, etc.

At the store I was at before they basically gave us the finger there was no charge for events. You just showed up and if you won you got 20 to 30 bucks in store credit.

FYI, GW gives them $150 in product support per quarter. So it looks like they are using the tournament cash for pure profit (??)

Not quite.

GW "gives" a store 150.00 in support per quarter, IFF you maintain a certain stock level and business practices. I emphasize the word 'give', because it doesn't come without a cost. The store has to keep certain product in stock, including LOTR.
The support could be for tournament prize support. Or scenery. Or paints for painting classes. Or models for a display cabinet. Or replacements for things like 5th editon rulebooks that are suddenly worthless.

Not 'pure profit' by a long shot.

I would say 10$ is what it takes for most events to run an event from a logistics/employee time/taking up space.

Remember, when you are playing Game A all day, the people who play Game B are not there buying up game B stuff.

I don't mind paying extra for things like:
*Food provided (pizza or food)
*Trophies or larger prizes
*Events with exceptional terrain

If the goal of the store is to move merchandise, Having an entry fee which can be bought by a minimum purchase or even door prizes of store credit is also fine by me. I have been to events which were 25$, provided food, an awesome event and then gave people 25$ store credit in door prizes from a random raffle.

A well-run event usually far outpaces the cost of entry.
