not sure if this is the right place for this question but here it goes

what is the size of the drop pod's lower half?

Im playing in an Apocalypse game in July and would like to play test drop pods for my dark angel and chaos armies before i spend the money in buying or building them

i think they are the size of a large ordnance template but unsure

thank you

The large blast template is a good aproximation of their footprint. They are around 6" tall with the gun mounted about halfway up that.

What Nevelon said is pretty well correct. I would also point out that drop pods are a royal pain to assemble. Of my 5 that I have done, only one actually has the doors shut and stay closed properly.. the others have some issue or other on the doors.

All three of mine fit together nicely, but I did notice some warping of the "wings/fins" that could very easily make for poor fitment. Some aggressive manhandling did the trick to bend them back into shape.

To the OP, LOS and cover will be a bit of a pain to figure out without the model, but as it's apoc that will probably be the least wonky thing going on.

If you're looking for a reasonable proxy for a Drop Pod, I recommend Solo cups. They're pretty close on their own, but I took it a step further by cutting one about an inch from the rim and glued it to a whole one and added fins made from foamboard. Next to a GW Drop Pod, it's really really close.

I find it telling that the picture on the back of the box is not put together well. The hose from the harness bit is not seated corectly. Part of me hopes they change the drop pod assault rule, so I don't feel the need to buy a 3rd pod so I can drop 2 on the first turn. I put together 2 of those darn things already, and that was two too many.

Tacticaly, I love what they do. The models can go

The actual base is MUCH smaller than people realize.

Its about the same size as a 60mm base.

Yes, that is right (its just not a circle).

Soft drink cans are an ubiquitous proxy for drop-pods, to the point that veteran gamers enter fits of rage when a new player uses them. They're completely fine to use in casual games, but some players might take offence more than if you used something else to proxy.

hey all, i agree, my drop pod took a while to assemble and yes i didnt all fit that well.

Despite looking cool, the drop pods are expensive and time comsuming which is why i STILL intend to make some 'proxy' pods using a personal thermal cup flask.

I'll post some pick of the outcome (hopefully this weekend).

Which is why I used the term footprint in my initial response. If you place a drop pod on a large blast template, the outer blades/wings will each touch the outer edge of it. The core body will be smaller then that, probably by around half an inch or so (I'd have to go measure). When I play, I check distances from the edges of the blades, not the small pentagon the are attached too, as when the doors are popped, they represent the majority of the hull.

There are pros and cons for using a smaller (soda can) proxy. It's harder to hide behind, and if you give it a locater beacon, that will cover less of the table. But a smaller pod can be dropped into tighter locations with less fear of scatter/mishaps.

Most of mine (11 of 15) are from templates downloaded off the net (GW France had them up for long enough that anyone who wanted them, got them. )
3 are Miniature scenery "troop landers" (bought a couple of years before the kit was released) and the last one is an actual GW kit (got it 3rd hand and had to repair it as some cack-handed noob had used about 3 tubes of superglue to assemble it badly.)

I must have something like 10 or so drop pods. 5 from a first batch, and yeah, they fit together horribly. And so much painting!!!!

The next 5 were better...until I spray painted them and the paint spider webbed on me. Now I have to figure a way to strip them down.

I must have had an old batch model, mine was terrible.
I've had tanks with some warping but the drop pod pieces had to be bent to fit and the internal parts all needed filing to fit together, good old GW.

Im well on my way with the custom pods now, will post pics when done.
