Heres a local story you all may or may not find interesting.

http://www.oregonlive.com/politics/index.ssf/2012/06/arrest_made_in_huge_oregon_tax.html

Discuss.

First, My state sucks, and is full of incompitent idiots and policies for starters.

Second, this woman is an idiot. Ok thinking on the scam part, but if she had done some ID theft first, then she would probably have gotten away with it. She has 2.1 mil on a debit card, and buys a $2000 vehicle and $800 worth of tires to put on said vehicle?!?!?!!!! I am sure the 1999 Dodge Caravan is lovely, but really?? Then she loses the card, WOW, and reports it missing to get a replacement, thus bringing attention to herself and leading to her arrest.

Whacky...

Somewhere in south-central England.

If I had 2.1 million on a card I would have bought a fast car and got out of the state, while grabbing as much cash and buying as much portable property as possible.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Corpses, everybody's a zombie to you.

Anyway, this sounds like idiocy on both parts, the perpetrator and the DoR.

Just amazing. How there isn't an automated audit check for any refund over a few thousand dollars is simply incredible.

Then when the article goes on to say that income tax returns are not much more than 80%. That there'd be a modern nation with returns less than 95% is amazing. I mean fething hell people, governance is a serious thing. All the political rhetoric just has to stop and this kind of thing needs to be fixed.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

No, its something Joe the Plumber can have an opinion on.

Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh.

Fair point. I guess I should have said governance is something that ought to be serious

So further information has come out about what happened. The woman submits this "tax refund", the automated system sees irregularities and it is flagged for review. Then a real live woman who works at the tax office, looks it over, and gives it the ok.

I have no word on the continued employment status of the woman at the tax department, but the state has issued a statement of something like "obviously our system isnt perfect and needs some work, we will do a better job."

Sad thing is, there's still people who get away with far more than this.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Wow. So there was an automated check, but that was over-ridden by the unique stupidity of one individual. Well, I guess no system can ever be completely safe from a deeply incompetent employee.
