Which character in Mass Effect did you romance, and why (not necessary)? Mine was Tali for 2 and 3, because she's got a gentle feel to her. None in the original game, since I left Ashley to die, and I'm not really interested in Liara.
|
I should have left him there. He had served his purpose. He owed me nothing - yet he gave himself to me willingly. Why? I know not. He is nothing more than a pathetic human. An inferior race. A mon-keigh. But still I broke off my wings so that I might carry him easier. I took him from that place, into the snowstorm where our tracks will not be found. He is heavy. And he is dying. And he is slowing me down. But I will save him. Why? I know not. He is still warm. I can feel his blood ebbing across me. For every beat of his heart, another, slight spill of heat. The heat blows away on the winter wind. His blood is still warm. But fading. And I have spilled scarlet myself. The snow laps greedily at our footsteps and our lifeblood, covering them without a trace as we fade away.
'She sat on the corner, gulping the soup down, uncaring of the heat of it. They had grown more watery as of late she noted, but she wasn't about to beggar food from the Imperials or the "Bearers of the Word." Tau, despite their faults at least didn't have a kill policy for her race.' |

Liara, since I've got a weak spot for blue aliens (or exotic people in general) and I liked her innocent curiosity. Not to mention that I like the asari species in general; plus I've played as Femshep and Kaidan just wasn't an option.
Sadly, a good deal of her innocence got lost in the later years, but even under her newfound armoured shell she retained this soft vulnerability which just made me want to cuddle her anytime she gives me a sad or worried look. On the other hand, her becoming slightly more badass had its good sides as well, not in the least because it started to plunge me into even more adventures.
If it wasn't for her I'd have probably gone for Garrus, but the way things went I've stuck with Dr. T'soni throughout all three games. ME3 in particular had some amazingly emotional scenes. Beautifully done, really had me moved.

Ashley. I really like Tali and all but at the end of the day, she was an alien and I couldnt romance an alien. (Dont get me wrong, Garrus was my best friend fething ever)
For some reason, Ashley just really appealed to me. Which is strange because usually I dont like those tough girls, (Tali is usually the character in games I would fall for) It is probably because Ashley was with me from the start and she got along so well with me and Kaiden. I loved my Kaiden, myself, Ashley party and I am thankful that Garrus stepped up like he did and effectively became my guys best friend, he couldnt replace Kaiden.
Ya for some strange reason I found Ashley awsome. We had the same feelings on damn near everything (except poetry, but I didnt mind that).
If I ever play a female Shep, (I doubt it) I would go for Kaiden. Cause Kaiden is another character I really liked.

Its not that bad, like any character, you just have to keep talking to her and be nice. I even told her I was just inerested in her as friends and the game still had me going on the romance path.Much to my major confusion. Oh and listen to Kelly (Dont sleep with her before the Omega Relay)

Tali because she is innocent, and has got Dat Ass.
Also found it kind of romantic that she "adapted" to me.
Not to mention she is adorable, I don't get the "Dawwwwsss" often but I always did with Tali.

I liked some of the concepts in the Mass Effect artbook. An actual alien rather than a human with glowy eyes and circuits tattooed to her face. Shame how it ended up, but given most of the fan art I've seen for her, a lot of people apparently prefer her to look 98% human. And lol @ hiding that bunch of hair under the suit.
I'll just try to forget that badly photoshopped picture and continue to think of her in the appearance I'm most used to.

Femshep player here. Liara in ME1 (Kaidan got vaporised in atomic fire). In ME2 and 3 it was Garrus. He and Tali had stood by my Shepard through everything. They and Joker were her best friends in the entire galaxy. I didn't even know Garrus was a romance option in ME2 until I stumbled onto it, so it seemed entirely natural that my Shepard romanced him as I role-played my Shepard, making decisions based on what I thought she would do rather than just whether one was paragon or renegade. Plus Garrus had some amazing lines, such as popping the heat sink in ME2 and Shepard's final conversation with him in ME3.

Goes for all ME2 characters. Wish I had seen more of Samara and Kasumi, too. That being said, I kinda understand they couldn't possibly grant everyone an equal amount of screentime. Would've just been too much stuff applying only to a segment of the playerbase - the reason they cut out the origins from DA2 ( ). At least they all had their moments and no-one was forgotten.

They left them out because the game was rushed, not intentionally.
Building such a huge relationship and story with a character in ME2 to just give them 15-20 minutes of screen time in the final game is just a terrible idea.

No, you're not the only one. She was always my favorite, even though Garrus was my character's best friend. Not once have I played the original Mass Effect with romance since Tali wasn't available then. In ME 2 and 3, always her, and always will be.

If you use your brain, its very easy to figure out.
Why would they leave out characters they developed extensively in the earlier games to only be on screen for 15-20 minutes for one mission, a little 1 minute convo at the citadel, and then a talk at the end?
Because EA feths up everything they touch, including the ending.

Karon wrote:Why would they leave out characters they developed extensively in the earlier games to only be on screen for 15-20 minutes for one mission, a little 1 minute convo at the citadel, and then a talk at the end?
Because of the reasons I mentioned? I for one find it rather unrealistic to assume that a grand total of 20 characters should have been given an equal amount of screentime, complete with their own missions and extensive downtime-dialogue and romance scenes. I'm sorry, but get real. At some point you just have to draw a line, not because of time constraints but because every game has a budget, and even with the millions pumped into ME3 (you can bet that it's been more than ME1 and ME2) you're simply bound to reach an end somewhere.
Content that isn't used by everyone is potentially wasted content, and given that the squad member limit was still at 2 this would make 18 characters redundant for the average game. Is this an ideal solution for us gamers? No, but every company has an obligation to their investors to work somewhat efficiently. Welcome to capitalism.
Also, why would you even expect to get +50% the amount of game for the same price?
And so they balanced. ME1 companions as squadmates accompanying you on missions, not having their own quests but having extensive dialogue and LI scenes, and ME2 companions as acquaintances that have their own missions dealing with their character and/or their past but who won't accompany you elsewhere. I for one thought it worked rather well.
Assumptions that "the game was rushed" when it was actually delayed are merely echoing the negativity running rampant on BSN for the sake of badmouthing the game by grasping at any straw that may make it look bad, just because you didn't like an aspect of it. You don't have to justify yourself - if you didn't like the game for any reason, you are free to do so, but please don't conjure some sort of "proof" out of thin air that is supposed to convince every human on this planet to agree with you. Tastes in storytelling are simply different, and you won't (or rather shouldn't) be judged just because you would have preferred a more standard/actioney/happy/whatever ending.
Considering the amount of detail that went into all the cinematics and dialogues, I'm rather sure that it took quite some time to make them. Hell, the last 20 minutes of the game feel like a proper blockbuster movie with all the characters showing up and doing their thing, and the uberlong pre-rendered scenes of the battle and the Crucible's activation etc. It's funny that the people complain it was rushed are often the same ones complaining that there was "too much talk" at the end and how they would've preferred some cliché boss fight with a recycled model hopping around the level and shooting lazers at ya...
If anything was rushed, it was the execution of the ending (as I think that the DLC they're working on now has already been planned before the game went gold), though I do believe that "rushed" is too strong a word here considering that it applies only to this aspect of the game and that it (probably) wasn't that much which would have been cut from any original designs. I for one only expect a couple additional cinematics for the battle (something better-suited for the various War Assets we managed to collect) as well as minor clarifications on the effects of the choice you made at the end (the kind of stuff I already have made up as valid conclusions drawn from what I've been shown).
Karon wrote:Because EA feths up everything they touch, including the ending.
I'm very sceptic of EA - and other industry giants - and do believe they have a negative influence on the market, but I don't necessarily see this extending to this particular game. If "EA feths up everything they touch", do you think ME2 was fethed up? Do you think Battlefield was fethed up? Do you think Dragon Age: Origins was fethed up? ...
But hey ... generalisations and extremes are always a fun thing to wield in a debate! Jeez.
PS: I'm rather sure no EA exec was involved in writing the ending and that it did actually come from BioWare. There's no giant conspiracy going on here.

I'm not really trying to back up or deny any point of view here, but I'm sure I read in one of the xbox mags that Bioware admitted they would have liked more time, but had to follow deadlines during their reaction to the ending controversy. Would need to double check, but pretty danged sure I read that in a April or May issue. As to ME2 characters not getting a good look in, aye was a bit of shame about that. I know 100% a Bioware writer said they regret doing the 'everyone can die' now, as it meant they had to factor in that every character might be dead, hence they didn't want an hour or two of gameplay you could only see if you saved Samara and so on. They basically backed themeselves into a corner, and where not sure what to do with them. Sad really though, after playing through most of ME3 with my main, the two characters I have still back playing ME1 and ME2 are now unlikely to bother with certain ME2 love interests as pretty much nothing comes from it. Jacob for example.
