There was a thread a little while back that said G.W. instructed retailers to pull the 5th ed. 40k rulebook from the shelves.

Are stores compensated by G.W. for books and codicies that are pulled, or does the store just take a loss?

While i cannot say for certain, they are probably made to tahe the cover pages off, toss the rest and send those few pages in to GW....whether they are compensated or not...i think it would surprise me more if GW actually did.

It may even be a req. To get new stuff in, who knows? Mikhaela would definitely be one to ask, seeing as how he owns a shop and all.

I'll take a sudo-guess and say they are probably exchanged 1 for 1 with the new books. I am basing this off of the new paint range that was released.

It would depend on where they get their supply and the terms.

Certainly GW took old pot of paint back after the recent change and gave credit against new product. I would not imagine there are many (any?) distributors that offer sale or return on wargaming products generally or we wouldn't see bargain bins in FLGs.

My guess is GW will offer a limited credit on return AoBR and Rulebooks to be spent on 6th edition.

I believe one of the flgs in my area got credit on all of the old paints when the line switched over.

I am assuming the same would be true with books.

If GW directs the dealer to pull copies they are issued a credit. If not they eat the product when the new edition comes out.

I know my FLGS has several old army books & codexes in a big tub marked "make offer". Along with a bunch of other superceded rules, modules, etc. for many games.

He's got a mind like a steel trap. By which I mean it can only hold one idea at a time;
it latches on to the first idea to come along, good or bad; and it takes strenuous effort with a crowbar to make it let go.

I can personally confirm that the store owners eat old gw codices.

One time I walked into a local comic book store and came upon this fat bearded dude gnawing on the old Imperial Guard codex right after the new one came out. He looked pretty perturbed (I'm talking deer in the headlights stunned) and I turned around and walked out of the store as fast as I could.

It depends on how your FLGS gets their stock. If they have an account directly with GW, there are terms and conditions under which they can get credit. Not all accounts get this, if I understand correctly. If your FLGS uses an independent distributer then the store will likely wind up "eating it".

No, not generally. Unless GW specifically specifies that they will take back old product, we eat it. Wasn't always like this, and on some things we do get returnability.

Paints I got to ship back. But i've eaten a dozen army books this year, and now a couple 5th edition HC's.

Before anyone gripes: This is a cost of doing business, and not just something inherent to GW by any means.[b] Want an old dystopian wars rulebook? Old editons of RPG's? Expansions for boardgames that no longer have the main game in print? All stores have stuff like this kicking around. Hell, I've got many tons of comic books in my basement that didnt sell. A couple of rule books doesn't even make me blink.

GW is one of only two companies I've dealt with that have taken stock back over the years. Kudos to them for that. It doesn't always happen, but like the paint rack, it's a huge bonus when they do. The other company is Battlefront miniatures. Not too much of a surprise, since BF has a preponderonce of GW employees from the golden age of Warhammer.)

Granted but I imagine edition changes affect the saleability of old war gaming rules more so than RPG's due to importance of play in FLGS. It's easy for me to convince a few friends to throw down for a game with my old mage books from the 90's, but when it comes to getting a 40k or warmachine game in at the shop it's gonna be with the latest ruleset 99.99% of the time.

This was true with the recent paint changeover. Codeces, on the other hand, are not bought back when a new one comes out. I am doubting that they're gong to buy back old core rulebooks.

"If you really want to know what it was like, to fight in the air in the great War, then go up to someone you have never met and who has never done you the slightest harm and pour a two-gallon tin of petrol over them. Then apply a match, and when they are nicely ablaze, push them from a fifteenth-floor window after first perhaps shooting them a few times in the back with a revolver. And be aware as you are doing these things that ten seconds later someone else will quite probably do them to you. This will exactly reproduce... the substance of First World War aerial combat and will cost your country nothing. It will also avoid the necessity of ten million other people to die in order for you to enjoy it."

Not to mention that GW has very open return policies for exchanging product at GW stores. When my FLGS is sitting on product that isn't moving, they trade it out at the Chicago Battlebunker for better selling or newer stock.

My FLGS still has the 4th edition Tyranids codex in shrink wrap in the back room. If I wanted to I could probably just ask to take it and that would be that.

I work at my FLGS and this is exactly how we see it as well. It's nice when GW takes stuff back for credit on occasion. It's not expected, nor should it be.

I would imagine that a savvy game store owner knows not to keep too much stock in aging rules books anyway.

After 3+ years of selling a codex or main book, I'd imagine you keep stocks pretty low.

Definatly one of those things you don't think about when considering game retail.

Thanks for the replies. I suspected that stores were not reimbursed, but was not sure.

Does GW require stores to stock aging codicies? I know that their stores generally do, and they do not even stock most of their own miniature range.

makes me wonder if you guys (store owners) shouldn't do "garage sales" once or twice a year to earn something back on the gak that didn't sell--assuming that it's got nearly 0 value..

Uh... what would be the point of GW not stocking all of their army books ?

I was referring to FLGS who use GW as a distributor. It is my understanding that GW places certain restrictions on what you buy from them.

It was not long ago that GW did not stock all of their codicies. Dark Eldar was not stocked in their stores for years.

Some stores do - they have sales to get old stuff off the shelves, or bargain bins (and still, some of that stuff just lingers forever). Others will not budge at all. It doesn't matter if a book has been on the shelf for ten years, and the last time it was opened and read was 9 years, 11 months ago - it's still full price and nothing is going to change that, hoping for that _one_ guy who really really loved Shadowrun 2nd edition and will buy the cybergear source book without a moment's hesitation.

One of my FLGS has that mentality.. 3rd and 4th ed codexes are full retail, and used minis that he got as trade are MORE than retail, since they are "OOP".. can you tell he is a MTG-driven store?
