How do you think a game similar to KOTOR would be if it were set in 40k? You could pick your chapter and fly around as a captain and his honor guard to different planets, doing missions and whatnot for the locals, joining epic battles or undergoing covert missions. Basically would it be cool if KOTOR and Skyrim had a baby that wore power armor?

It would be epic if done correctly,
That means if it happened GW would need to choose a good company for it,
And if they did a MMO I would open up all races not just marines,
And balancing it would probably be quite challenge, but it could lead to basically an alternate universe where fluff is advanced and players have a direct effect

I think that would be cool. Honestly it might be cooler (and make more sense) if it was a game where you started off as a low ranking Inquisitor and the game chronicles you rising up through your ranks. And instead of light/dark side or paragon/renegade you could have puritanical/radical, which open up different missions and whatnot.

Now -that- is something I would play!

True, but players wouldn't really heavily affect it. The galaxy is really big, and even if they are way over the top, theres no way for five marines (or daemons, or orks, or nidz, or whatever) to heavily influence it

That is a great idea actually. And who doesn't want a daemonblade?

Would be cool, if it went the Elder Scrolls route and you could select your race, playing as an Eldar, or Ork might be fun.

Lots of replay value to that too.

THQ was going to publish a war hammer 40k mmo called dark millennium but recent financial problems at THQ resulted in the game being down graded to a single player game with multiplayer. So you may get your wish but it might not be as good as big as you hope. On a good note I think the developer that made Dark Siders is the one making the game and Dark Siders was a lot of fun.

How about SPACE MARINE on kinect? With more levels and first person view. and you can be different races with different missions.

Give the rights to Obsidian, and get some black library writers there and they'd do pretty well for story.

Sure it'd be buggy out the gate, but hey.

The reason it took so long for a 40K RPG to come out, and then the results were somewhat lackluster, is that the universe just isn't good for that kind of format.

Grim darkness, only war, blah blah. There's really no chance for interaction in the game universe unless it's just a Planetside style shooter with no concerns about a plausible back story. Look how ludicrous the Dawn of War games end up being, story wise. Fun, but ludicrous.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

40k is supah grimdark. Every one would always be dying and gak. You'd need to be really really smart and cautious to survive, but even then yer still screwed.

So I don't think I'd work too well as an RPG.

Hmm...playing as a gaunt...

Now that's a funny mental image.

I guess I must have a PC made of gold or something, because I've never had problems with bugs and glitches in Fallout: New Vegas, besides the odd up-side-down weapon here and there. Or are their other games worse?

But yeah. OT, 40k isn't really great for RP unless you do smaller scale with inquisitors or rogue traders, or maybe mercenary companies, just because i can't imagine there being very many tough choices to make, or things to do besides killing people. Scaling with power would work better that way as well, because rogue traders and inquisitors have access to a larger variety of gear and equiptment then standard troopers. I could see orks being crazy and fun, but what about other factions? I suppose that Eldar players could choose aspects, but what then? You're an aspect warrior. Get really, really high-leveled, and you become an exarch, with a couple extra pieces of gear. Whoop-dee-doo. Tau would mull about being firewarriors forever, getting nothing to choose between besides pulse rifle or pulse carbine. eventually, they become a suit, and can get other weapon choices. To really, really make that work, you'd have to make up a bunch of weapons and gear for people to choose from, without breaking lore.

Reduced down to single player, no longer a mmo.

Though it wouldn't be hard to do an RPG, have it follow Rogue Traders, or the various factions that would be sneaky, stealthy, or all other variants.

Eldar have Guardian-Ranger-Each Aspect-Warlock-Autarch-Farseer
Tau have FW-Pathfinder-StealthSuit-few different XV8s-Broadside-XV9
Marines have Scout-Tac-Dev-Assault-Sternguard-Vanguard-TacTermie-AssaultTermie-Captain

So there's more than enough scope.

It's going to have a robust multiplayer element to it, apparently.

The only avenue I can see for an open-ended RPG in the vein of KOTOR or Mass Effect is an Inquisitor game. Instead of paragon/renegade or light side/dark side you get puritan/radical Inquisitor points and such. You'd have justification to build a diverse party, and you could actually cavort around with aliens to a degree depending on your stance in the Inquisition. An RPG as a Space Marine, outside of an action game with RPG elements, just wouldn't work. Space Marines aren't really exemplars of choice outside of killing xenos and heretics with one weapon instead of the other, and in what order.

Haha, they say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

im really shocked no one has mentioned an assassin game, you play as a vindi assassin and go off on missions, make it like splinter cell (the first 3 not the terrible ones after... although double agent was good), or like Deus EX.

An imperial guard game like ghost recon would work too, a 4 man kill team on a mission to kill an enemy commander or some such.

the main thing would be NO space marines, unless they are NPC's on the imperial side to help out a little with info or something, but are not in any combat in the game

So you want a pure sniping game?

You could do an Assassin's Creed-style game using the various temples of assassin. You could take the typical sniping route or one of the stealthier close combat ones. Or, best of all, be an Eversor and just explode at the end of every level.

I've liked the idea of a Brothers in Arms-style game where you play as IG. You could do an asymmetrical multiplayer component, where you can either play as a squad of 5 Guardsmen (with squad commands) or a Space Marine. The other team could be Chaos Marines and squads of cultists or what have you. That would be fun, but that's going past the open world idea and just becoming a 40k game I'd like.

I agree that doing an RPG from the stance of an Inquisitor would work. Even as a member of the Deathwatch would work. Given that they have a higher degree of flexibility in who they work with and what they do.

I like this idea a lot and it makes more sense than a captain running around doing random errands instead of killing xenos and heretics. Perhaps you could start off with the option of deciding whether you are Ordo Xenos, Ordo Malleus, or Ordo Hereticus, and from there being able to build a small team of henchmen and go on missions. Also, depending on your actions you can become more puritan or radical.
