I am fairly new to lotr avg and want to know if conversions are allowed.
Is it like warhammer when all the parts have to be from games workshop? Or is any conversion unacceptable?

Personally, I do a lot of conversions, but never buying parts from other systems and mixing them in.

If you play at a GW or in Tournies, I don't think you are allowed to convert. If you just play with friends or at a FLGS, then I can't foresee a problem.

Ok thanks. So giving a man of Rogan a head, weapon and shield swap could make a suitable corsair?

Sure, a corsair with some looted equipment would be fine.

My orcs have a few shields and other stuff from various factions mixed in.

conversions are acceptable, but you have to make clear what the model is.
