Is it possible to build a Legion of the Damned chapter?? I have been reading the C:SM and like the idea of the Legion of the Damned. I know that they are an elite unit in the codex, but since they book came out I am just wondering how one could build a chapter surrounding them. I guess I just like the idea of a warped kin SM loyal to the emperor and still pushing the bounds of chaos... just curious, I would use the C:SM or maybe the CSM codex would be better not sure... and then build them with no terminators and all tactical units with a mix of heavy units. Thoughts on this.

No real way. Suppose you could try CSM Thousand Sons if you were desperate.

You could very easily play a vanilla marine army as LoD. You would have to find some why to mark your actual LoD squads if you choose to use them.
Here's some inspiration.

There used to be a way back in 3rd/4th edition. There was a Chapter Approved article called "Cursed Founding Chapters", with it's own list of acceptable units for each Force Org slot, and then each of the Chapters listed got a special ability unique to that Chapter, that you paid points per model for. The LoTD ability was an unstoppable deep-strike to represent their "ghosting in", and all their troops (and vehicles, too!!) got a 6+ Inv. save.
It's too bad LoTD got vanilla-fied (not to mention totally explained so they are no longer mysterious- blech) in the current rules.

My Marine army was originally going to be all LotD, because all the fluff I had dug up on them was awesome. Then I went on hiatus for a year or two, and good thing I did. I have much less models to repaint now that they are just a elite choice (not to mention the quality of the painjob.)
You could make your own rules for them based on the current rules/apocalypse datasheet to use as a full army. Obviously you'd have to have your opponent agree and make sure nothing is overpowered, but I don't see it being a big problem.
Of course, this wouldn't work fluff-wise, but even GW doesn't always respect their own fluff.

What they are now is what they were originally. Their first incarnation was in 2nd edition Codex Ultramarines as a special squad.

Oh, I know that. I fielded them next to my Ultras once in a while in 2nd edition. One of my favorite squads when I field them using the Cursed Founding rules is made of the original metal release, I think from early Third ed.
Except that they are no longer mysterious at all, and that's a bummer. They were "alluded" to being the Fire Hawks, but not for sure. There were also rumors that they might be a 1st founding erased chapter, or even the physical embodiment of the Emperor's Will!!

They'd actually be very well-represented by a foot necrons list, since they don't use vehicles and immortals are so close to a marine in stats. Even the resurrection protocols fit their fluff - the Sergeant Centurius character has a skull that can resurrect fallen legionnaires!

Yeah, apart from the fact that they use imperium weapons. No gauss technology here!

The Gauss weapons could easily represent the ethereal nature of the LotD.
