Hello all,
I am starting to paint some SW models and I am looking for some advice on the priming color. Just to preface, all stores within 50 miles of me only sell black and white priming options. Since SW have a chalky blue armor color, would it be best served to base them in white or would it not really matter? The armor color i plan to use is GW Fenrisian Grey.

Thanks all!

Well, it depends on your approach.

Do you want them clean with a lot of "POP!" to them?
-white primer

Or..

Do you want them dirty looking, battled, and rough?
-black primer

Reason being is because most people will tell you that white is for bright (and for more advanced painters because spots you miss will stick out like a sore thumb) and black is for darker schemes (and more forgiving to beginners)

But, after it's all said and done, if you've got enough paint on the mini, the primer color won't make a lick of difference.

I primed my wolves with grey (Krylon)

Why is it that only those who have never fought in a battle are so eager to be in one?

I wish stores around me sold a plastic safe grey. I think my end game is to dip them in quickshade just to get them on the table sooner. I usually use dark tone so that it gives a dark gritty look to the model.

What primer do you grey users recomment? Stores around me do not carry a Krylon grey that is safe on plastics.

I use army painters equivelent of Shadow Grey, but one my tanks I use a plain grey primer.

When I don't have the option to use any of the above, I pick white over black, just because I layer via drybrushing, so white allows the highlights to stand out, but a black primer will let the shadows stand out better, they both have pros and cons

Basic Indoor/ Outdoor Krylon Primer (grey) is what I use. It's not specifically for plastics, but it does work on them.
This guy:

Alternative to Krylon would be the basic Rustoleum Primer (grey). Slightly pricier, but just about the same outcome.

Lol I know that guy. I own a can of it, but never used it on plastics due to it containing Acetone. I thought it would melt my plastic men.

All spray primers (at least all that are worth a damn) have an acetate or acetone. They won't melt your models. I've always been a bit weary of Krylon though. I know many members will say they've never had trouble, and it's the best product out there, but one of Krylons main selling points is that it, 'goes on thick'. That's all well and good for some things, just not models. I use Dupli-color sandable primer. It's thinner than Krylon, (yes it is Krylon users, I promise). And it's a higher grade product. It may cost a dollar more a can, but it's well worth it.

EDIT: I use white primer, but I've previously had good results with gray.

I used a grey car primer for mine but am going for a grey closer to Codex grey (don't like the blue that the standard GW wolves are).
This is an example where Ive just used the primer as a base coat too & started the base coats of the other parts of the model:

Note that I also used the old granite foundation paint for the black bits as then I can ink wash the whole model to shade it.
For my Blood Claws I also filed off the shoulder pad trim to make the armour look a bit more 'basic'.

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!
