Yes.
You can take spears and Shields or Additional hand weapons and shields.

With spears and shields you will get a +1 to armor saves in both shooting and close combat.

With Additional hand weapons and shield you will get a +1 to armor saves in shooting only. In close combat you have to use the Addtional hand weapon.

You get the shield armor against magic too.

It means that, if they did not charge, a unit armed with spears gets supporting attacks from an extra rank. So, if the unit is less than 10 models wide (for infantry, 6 for MI), you get supporting attacks from the 3rd rank and if in horde formation (which also gives an extra rank of supporting attacks) you get supporting attacks from the 4th rank.

Oh yeah, and High Elves, with spears, in horde can get supporting attack from the 5th rank because of their army special rule "Martial Prowess" iirc.

Yup had a game yesterday where I got 50 attacks from my High Elf Spears....so many dice
