Hey Dakka, I play mobby black templar and have been using two chaplains in just about all of my games. As would be expected they usually get 1-shoted by powerfists and the like. Not a big deal as I go in to battle with this knowledge already. I was watching another game though and when the chaplain got smacked with a str 8 weapon in close combat one of the cenobyte servitors died instead. Are we, as templar players, allowed to do that? I mean I already feel sinister using the servitors for wound allocation shenanigans but giving the chaplains extra wounds to basically make him immune to insta death seems rough

If the servitors form a retinue with the chappy, then that is ok - in combat they would be a unit with the chappy, and you hit units, not models .

From memory that *isnt* how it works with chaplains, sadly, meaning you dont get to assign away wounds.

It depends... was that chaplain leading a command squad?

If so then he would count as an upgrade character and not an independent character.

Meaning he COULD NOT get singled out in close combat until all other models in the command squad had been killed. If this is the case then the other player acted properly.

The rules for this are under "Retinues" in the 40K rulebook which is page 48 if you are using the AoBR mini-rulebook.

However if the chaplain was merely attached to a crusader squad, he would count as an independent character for the purposes of close combat. Meaning he COULD be singled out in CC. If this was the case then the other player did not act according to the rules.

Right

If cenobyte servitors counted as a retinue then you wouldn't be able to attach a chaplain to a crusader squad.

But you can, ergo they are not a retinue.

Massterfett - actually BT get all the bad bits of retinues - they still get singled out in close combat. This overrides the BRB rule on retinues.

says even in squads ic's are still targettable in cc

I played Ordo Malleus since before it had a codex.

I didn't find out about the details of his squad but mine lead crusader squads. It seems like I've been playing it right then.
