Rodney Smith joins us in the third chair. Rodney is the man behind the "Watch It Played" Youtube chanel which features both teaching new board games and allowing viewers to play along by voting for the next move.
Up first Rodney, Craig, and Russ discuss boardgame videography. What does it take to make a board game video and why do it?
Later the three dive into a detailed review of Core Worlds by Stronghold games. Does this sci-fi deck builder have what it takes to get Craig to the table?
All that and our other not-too-horrible segments including:
- Total Fan Girl
- Do You Ever Notice
- When you wish upon a game
- & More

Only made it through "Achievements in Gaming" so far. Gotta say, I was a bit disappointed with "Game of Thrones" this year. I'm not a book purist, but I thought they strayed from some elements of the story too much, to the detriment of many of the characters.

Good choice with Rodney.
His videos are some of the more positive forces in boardgaming at the moment and I always come away with a smile watching his family interact.
More people really need to watch his videos.

Another great show, guys. Was there something funny with the recording or do I need a new mp3 player.
A lot of great points about the videography.

The video stuff was real informative. I've been planning to get myself a HD camera and make some how to play videos for my game, and to show off better views of models and stuff. Any recommendations? I can prolly only afford $200 tops, so I've been hesitant.. don't wanna buy something that turns out to be sucky.

Just finished the episode - interesting "Didya Ever Notice". We've gone to a bunch of train shows down here (Northern Virginia), and I've never known one to pack up early. In fact, the main focus seems on really building an elaborate setup and showing off for the folks that come to see it - especially to the kids. I know my 7 year old son has loved it.
And yeah...the gaming retirement community. We've talked about that. We call it "The Commune"...
Craig, your comment about being "the old guys" was interesting as well. I've had somewhat the opposite experience. I'm the same age as you guys (just hit 40 last year). My main 2 conventions of choice are Prezcon and the World Boardgaming Championships (WBC). I've also hit "Cold Wars", which is kind of a mini-Historicon. Now...I think these are a bit different than the conventions you guys talk about. At Prezcon and WBC, they're all about board games, and a wide variety of them. There's a lot of Eurogames, but there's also a lot of war games - the hex and chit kind, simulating everything from the Battle of Thermopylae to WWII to the current conflicts in the Middle East. And "Cold Wars" (and I assume, by extension, Historicon) - while I saw some sci-fi and fantasy games, it was mostly historical miniatures (as you might expect). In any case, for these types of wargames - both boardgames, and minis - it seems like the predominant players are men in their 50s and 60s. There are some younger players to be sure, but their sure is a lot of gray hair. My buddy and I have wondered about the future of some of these cons, because we're just not seeing the influx of the 20-somethings. So...not sure what the conclusion here is...just that I seem to have a different experience in the gaming community down here.

Thanks for the kind words, guys, as always. Rodney was, as we knew he would be, awesome to work with, and a great addition to the 3C Stable
As far as your experience, Hokie . . . I'd have to agree, I was a bit narrow-minded. I think an exception to that observation would be any historical wargaming, where the vast majority of those grognards turn up You're right, no matter what convention, whenever I poke my head into chit-and-hex-land, there in are to be found most of the older guys who aren't in evidence elsewhere . . .
And I, too, was disappointed with GoT this season. Some great stuff, but too much streamlining to the detriment of characters that were already losing my interest (Daenerys . . . ). And VERY strange choice, to end cliff-hang the season where they did after giving such short shrift to the MASSIVE (supposedly) Battle of the Blackwater just one episode earlier . . . although the Alchemist's Fire effects were AMAZING . . .
So, yeah, color me disappointed and concerned for the next season . . .

Far-stretching, endless Time
Brings forth all hidden things,
And buries that which once did shine.
The firm resolve falters, the sacred oath is shattered;
And let none say, "It cannot happen here".

Oh, I don't think you were "narrow-minded", I just think we have completely different con experiences. From what I can tell, the cons I attend are nothing like GenCon, which seems to attract people from all over gaming/sci-fi/fantasy fandom. None of the cons I generally go to have 40K or Warmachine or the like, which seem to appeal to a younger crowd. Just different, and interesting to hear a different take.

Well, they've split book 3 into two seasons, so I'm hopeful that gives them the breathing room to "un-streamline" somewhat. And I agree...for as much publicity as the Battle of Blackwater got, and the acclaim it got after the fact, I was still let down. Stannis storming the walls? Little to no emphasis on the fact that the Tyrells showed up with Loras (in the books it was his brother, Garlan) wearing Renly's armor, causing half of Stannis' army to switch sides? Grrr... (But, also, yes the scene with Bronn shooting the flaming arrow to ignite the wildfire was pretty spectacular).
Too many other nitpicks to mention about Season 2, except that I thought just about every major character suffered, with the possible exception of Theon...until the very end when they did that goofy "knock him on the head" routine, and then showed Winterfell sacked...for no apparent reason.

Russ,
Love the new app, but am I crazy or is there no way to get a push notification when a new episode gets added (at least on the iOS version of the app)?
I mean, I know it isn't that big a deal to remember to check every couple of weeks for a new ep, but it seems like a no brainer for the app to send out a notification when new content gets added.
Is that functionality that can get added or is there something holding that back from being a reality (or am I just missing an easy settings switch somewhere)?

Ohh, great idea Yak! We've already had other listener input make it into the app (the buttons for play/ ff have gotten bigger). I'll submit this one as well!
