Hey dakka, I haven't played, painted or collected lord of the rings for a few years now, but have started to want to get back into it again. Seeing as my old armies were very ramshackle and a shambles, I'm going to make a new army, though probably to collect and paint seeing as no one at my LGS really plays it.
I'm looking to get a Gondor army, and for the army to be around 1,000 points before starting an evil army (probably easterlings or isenguard).
Basically, I was wondering if you guys could give me some pointers as to specifically what my army list should consist of (I don't know how much the rules have changed since the 2005 rulebook I have).

So here it is so far:

Boromir, Captain of the White Tower- 190pts
Horse, Shield

Faramir, Captain of Gondor- 75pts
Bow

30 Warriors of Minas Tirith- 250pts
10 spears, 20 shields, 10 bows

15 Rangers of Gondor- 125pts
5 spears

6 Knights of Minas Tirith- 78pts

that's 700 points, which I'd like to be the core of my army (still up for any changes)

I might go with allied Rohan for the other 300, something like:

Eomer, Marshal of the Riddermark- 90pts
Horse, shield

6 Riders of Rohan- 78pts

12 Warriors of Rohan- 92pts
12 shields, 4 throwing spears

Grimbold- (don't have his rules but I'm guessing around 50pts)

That totals to slightly over 1,000 points.
So how's that?

Hmm...I'm not familiar with Grimbold, but I've seen similar LOTR lists work...with the old rules.

When LOTR got it's update a few months ago, some new rules came out.

1) 33% of your models (heroes count towards the total number, but not part of the 33%) may carry bows. (This was in LoME too)

2) Warbands. There isn't a form of unit coherency, but you have to build your force in warbands. That is, 1 captain per warband, and up to 12 non-heroes in it. Calvary still count as 1 unit.

Also, I suggest maybe upgrading those riders into royal guard. In my experiences, Rohan Royal Guard are INCREDIBLY deadly.

P.S. You should totally go Isengard for your evil force (I play Isengard as well!)!

I should mention that Shrike has the older rules...

Okay, this afternoon I'll go over some of the list, make some tweaks and split them into warbands. Where are these rules? Are they in the army books? GW site? A new rulebook?

Army list v.2:

Warband one:
Boromir, Captain of the White Tower- 190pts
Horse, Shield
6 Knights of Minas Tirith- 78pts

Warband two:
Faramir, Captain of Gondor- 75pts
Bow
12 Rangers of Gondor- 101pts
5 spears

Warband three:
Captain of Gondor- 55pts
Shield
12 Warriors of Minas Tirith- 106pts
10 spears, 12 shields

Warband four:
Beregond of Gondor- 25pts
9 Citadel Guard- 81pts
9 spears
that's what I'd like to be the core of my army (still up for any changes)

I might go with allied Rohan for the other 300, something like:

Warband five:
Eomer, Marshal of the Riddermark- 90pts
Horse, shield
3 Rohan Royal Guard- 48pts

Warband six:
12 Warriors of Rohan- 101pts
12 shields, 4 throwing spears
Grimbold- (don't have his rules but I'm guessing around 50pts)

that's a total of 1000, though I am slightly concerned that my two main heroes are on horseback, leaving my weaker heroes to lead the foot troops, while neither of them have high armour or shields.
Also, the royal guard are £10 each, so unless I find them cheaper, they may be cut down to two and the points spent on either:
-perhaps replacing Grimbold with a Rohan captain (with a shield and heavy armour)
-maybe ditching Eomer's horse and sticking (if it's possible) Grimbold on a horse or (if not) swapping Grimbold with a captain on horseback using the "sons of eorl" model, because I think it looks badass.
-dropping grimbold and mounting the rohan on horses to ride with eomer.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

v.3:
Boromir, Captain of the White Tower- 190pts
Horse, Shield
6 Knights of Minas Tirith- 78pts

Warband two:
Faramir, Captain of Gondor- 75pts
Bow
12 Rangers of Gondor- 96pts

Warband three:
Captain of Gondor- 55pts
Shield
12 Warriors of Minas Tirith- 102pts
6 spears, 12 shields

Warband four:
Beregond of Gondor- 25pts
12 Guards of the fountain court- 132pts
12 spears, 12 shields

Warband five:
Eomer, Marshal of the Riddermark- 90pts
Horse, shield
2 Rohan Royal Guard- 32pts
10 riders of rohan- 130pts

This brings the total cost to 1005, but I don't really know what I can cut from it (I would take out a model, but they come in 6's and twelves so buying that many of them and not using one seems quite wasteful to me), and all the wargear options I like. Any ideas?

If you're taking Boromir on a horse, give him a lance! It increase his killing power in an unbelievable way. 6 attacks on the charge with +1 to wound and 6 points of might to back you up.

Also I'm assuming that the Rohan Royal guard come with horses?

Ol' Blighty

I'll take boromir with a lance, that does sound pretty mean...

I was thinking about ditching rohan, just because I already have the gondor cavalry, plus I decided I'd like the army to follow a story (this being the war for osgiliath before Boromir's joining the fellowship), so having osgiliath veterans instead of the cavalry, some more gondor footsloggers or rangers, etc.

here's a rough alternative list:
Boromir (shield, lance, horse)
6 knights

Faramir (bow)
12 rangers

Captain (shield)
12 warriors (12 shields, 6 spears)

Captain (bow, shield)
9 Osgiliath veterans

Beregond
12 guards of the fountain court (12 shields) (using citadel guard models to fit with story)

Damrod
12 rangers
or
Damrod
12 warriors of minas tirith

And yes, Royal guard come as default footslogging, but can be given a horse upgrade, making them 16 points each.
