So I'm learning myself how to play and I decided IG would be fun. I have what looks like a pack of Cadians and some of the Catachan jungle fighters, but the codex just seems to call them all troopers. Is the distinction just for fun then, or will I learn about playable differences as I read more? Thanks!

I play...

Sigh.

Who am I kidding? I only paint these days...

Nowadays he distinction is more for fun than anything, but back in the day there was a seperate codex catachan. And in the previous guard codex you could customise your forces with doctrines, which enabled you to take special rules for your guard so that they could fit the theme of your arm e.g light troops, heavy troops, disciplined, militia bla bla bla.

Yeah, even though the models look different they all have the same stats. And no, don't ask why Space Marines get different abilities because they're a different color but humans from entirely different environments and training regimes all have the same stats and abilities.

Ah, OK. I thought something was up, as it seemed it was a little strange that there are so many models for IG troopers but they're all the same

Haha yeah, to be honest it's always been that way with the exception of the previous Guard codex that had a ton of different traits you could give to your guys. For example Cadians had a sharpshooting trait which allowed you to reroll 1's to hit. Then the Steel Legion had a bonus for attacking orks.

It was pretty cool actually, I wish it was in the new codex. But if it makes you feel any better, Guard walk over most armies pretty easily.

Alot of the old codex's had some pretty nifty customisations where you could get certain special rules to make your own regiment/chapter/craftworld. But GW changed alot of it to make the game simpler (for the lack of a better word), it was a very cool era of the game for those who are interested in fluff, whereas IMHO the new era which is prevalent on us now is far more focused on a smooth running game that has ushered in a new far more competitive, less creative scene..... now I shall wait for the abuses to be hurled.

Well a lot of people like to play Catachans as veterans with one of the doctrines - can't remember which one, the one that gives infiltrate. But the're a bit rubbish.
It's a shame Cadians are the "standard" IG models since they're supposed to be much better than normal troops. I suppose game-wise they should have BS4 and stubborn as standard for infantry squads, but god knows how you'd balance that.
