Subject: Defective white spray paint?

I bought a matt white spray bottle (from thearmypainter) and the models that i spray it on get a very rough texture, almost like sandpaper.
And it sucks up my paints like a sponge. I´ve tried out different distances when i spray my models but it´s basically the same result.
Is there something wrong with my spraying technique? Or the spray bottle itself? (if that´s the case should i go and ask for a new one in my store?)

Also, don't put on too thick a layer. If you want a nice covering, spray once, let it dry, then spray again. I've found that if you spray too heavily in one coat, you get this problem.

All in all I haven't had too many good experiences with Army Painters spray cans, or rather their nozzles. To me it seems like they release too much paint. If you spray too close you will get a thick layer blotting out details, but when spraying further away to avoid that...the paint dries in air and you get the sand paper effect. While GW is more expensive it is, in my experience, a better spray paint. ....

For army painter you get this effect if you spray from too far away. Spray from about 6 inches away, and you should get a good even coat that doesn't cover up detail.

with TaP spray paints you need to spray short puffs really close!

I shake it real good for almost two minutes in room temperature and then spray it in my garage which is outside.

Thanks for the tip, it gets a lot better but at the same time my white spray paint always gets a rougher texture than my black paint even if I stay within 6 inches, which I think is odd

I've alays had bad times with white spray paint. With the exception of Tamiya white primer, every other product has gone on thick or splotchy or runny. Never had a problem with black or colors...just white.
As for shaking the can:
Grab the can by the end and twist your wrist so the ball in the can starts to run around the inside of the can. Do this for a minute or so. Then shake the can for another minute. This scrapes the paint off the sides and mixes the medium completely.

Army Painter Sprays work differently than say Citadel sprays. You need to make short burst from close range, otherwise the paint dries in mid air and forms a rough layer of small solid paint balls. Many people are not aware of that (and Army Painter doesn't stress it enough), so yours is not the first thread on the topic.

What kroot said...
This can actually happen with ANY paint, depending upon;
* the distance from the model
* the temperature
* the humidity.
This happened to me before, when it was very warm, and I was spraying from a greater distance to cover more models (a different brand). I got the EXACT results you are describing.
When it is hot I have to spray closer, and in a more controlled manner.
In using ANY spray primers, I have found that shorter sweeping bursts works best for me. I suggest experimentation with techniques on pieces on test material (pieces or spure, etc.) to see what works best.
Once you get a method down (after knowing about the temp thing and this kind of paint) I am sure you will get good results!
My favorite primers are:
* the armory brand
* krylon 2x coat (when not doing minis - its a bit thicker, use it for terrain and vehicles)
* army painter for one of my armies (use the colored primer).
I have found the GW paint to be equal to just about any random average quality spray paint (better than the $1 a can stuff, but not as good as armory or the army painter).
I also like priming with an airbrush, but thats just for my very best minis (more expensive primers) but you get amazing results.
best of luck to you!
