A friend of mine has asked me to show him how warhammer 40k works (only in basic-ish terms since the new one is out at the end of the month). So I've pulled together all my stuff and put together some army lists. I basically want to know whether the army lists are any good and which two would provide the most balanced game. If I can hook him in I get a new opponent.
We'll be playing at 2000 points.
Anyways,

Play 1000-1250 points on a 4'x4' table. 2000 points is overwhelming. Keep the special rules and wargear options to a minimum. Also, depending on the interests of the new player, you may want to keep the army types familiar. By that I mean humans vs aliens is familiar and comfortable. But a green ogre in space might be too silly... Again, this totally depends on the type of person you are showing the ropes to but I figured I would mention it. Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh and use good terrain! It really brings the game to life for a new player as opposed to taking tchachkis from your mom's coffee table or the fruit bowl from the kitchen and calling them "ruins".

This. I think IG vs Orks is your best bet in small battle to catch attention and interest. Especially on a smaller scale. 2000 points is just too long, you want a small intense battle that'll keep his interest.

I reckon that if you showed him the tyranid army, he would like to play that one. A trygon is the biggest model there and looks amazing.
@Deuce11 I completely agree that aliens vs humans is better that big green trolls in space.

Thanks for advice. I think the advice is spot on. Th thing that I love about WH40k is seing an army all laid out which is why I went for th idea of 2,000 points. Reading the advice, I've realised I can show off the armies on their respective shelf and play a 1,000 point game.
I'm thinking Orks vs Imperial Guard. From the above lists, what would you run for the two armies?

Have the orks and IG be just half of what they currently are to still show the pieces they have and just cut out the Priest Vets. Stick to platoons and vehicles. It's easy enough then to imagine those Chimeras having better troops with better guns inside =P

And don't forget to have tons of Orks on the field to show him how fast they drop dead. Also, a battle wagon full of Burna Boyz will draw his attention even more.
