I've found that terrain made out of cardboard and paper are a little handier than plastic ones, easier to set up and above all cheaper.
However, lacking the inspiration to shape and paint more buildings from scratch I was wondering if there are any good online shops for this kind of thing. Are there any?
I'm thinking quite stiff ready-printed cardboard buildings you easily fold together. Don't need opening doors or windows, just as terrain to stand behind. I've seen a couple on eBay but none that look right on a 40k battlefield. Perhaps a gothic cathedral would do?

GW used to have a few guides for building cardboard buildings. I know they used to also sell card stock buildings. My general concern is that some times metal models (even squads of them) can weigh enough to warp the buildings and fall off and get chipped.
I use foam core, pins, and elmers glue. It works pretty well. Its pretty easy to build your own and even make them look good.

Well, in the spirit of the OP, any sources for cheap terrain on the non-plastic/resin variety?

I made about a half dozen buildings/ruins out for about $50 last month. It took very little time, about an hour a piece plus painting and flocking. My materials were all readily bought at a craft/hobby store, including: Foam board, pva glue, flock, sand, rocks (just picked them up and washed them from gravel), paints (no GW paints for scenery for me), masonite (the stiff board on the back of wooden shelves and dressers) for the bases, modeling knives, and a metal ruler.
you can find templates online, in the back of the fluff filled rule books (I built the bunker from the back of the 4th ed brb), or just make them up.
There are tonnes of great tutorials on youtube. The Mini war gaming channel has some of my favorites.
As for buying pre built scratch buildings, I don't know of any, except blue table painting (a bit pricey but you get what you pay for!). A quick google search will be your best bet.

Good tips but it is mostly the painting part I'd like to avoid. Having a building in cardboard brown without any colors, doors or windows outlined is dull, but I have too many actual figures to paint to bother with terrain painting, so I'm looking for printed cardboard houses.

You can paint simple foamcore ruins with almost no effort whatsoever. My friends and I made a bunch way back in highschool that were just primed with textured spray primer (you can get it for a couple bucks at Michaels) and then drybrushed with grey. Super easy, and looks plenty serviceable.

True, but medieval German brick cottages don't blend in that well in the 40k landscape. It's hard finding good ones for 40k.
