Subject: Starting 6th with a new army

So, with 6th edition coming up, I am going to be getting a new army. I have played IG since 4th edition. I am very familiar with them, more so than every other army. However prior to my deployment to Afghanistan, I was pretty disappointed with 5th edition and the severe codex creep that came about with it. While IG can still very much compete, I found myself gravitating to Fantasy a lot more.
Having said that, if you were in the position to be able to get another army to start 6th edition with a new army. What would it be? Keep in mind what you expect from the new edition rumors.
Main armies I am considering in no particular order:
IG- again, would go with either Valhallan or Vostran models
Chaos SM
Orks
Nids
Tau
As you can tell I am more comfortable with non Imperial Space Marine armies, but would entertain them as long as they are NOT Grey Knights.
Thanks
Grix.

I have stalled getting my CSM Nurgle Death Guard up and running until the next Codex for CSM, so I guess I qualify as "waiting until 6th" to start..
But, I already have the vast majority of the models I need..
I would wait until the rulebook hits and figure out what you want to play after you know the ruleset.

You could go with an MEQ army, as they're usually reliable, and GW's favourites for giving stuff..
However, the Tau codex is going to be one of the first out for 6th ed, so you may want to go with them, as their new codex will be the first built for the new rule set.

Vanilla Marines can be counted on to be updated early and often. If you are planning to start building your army BEFORE 6th streets, that's the only reliable advice I can give you. For any choice on your list, I would wait until you have 6th in your grubby little mitts before building anything. You never know, GW in all its infinite wisdom could find a way to simultaneously nerf the clearly OP 4e Tau codex and buff their underplayed and subtle Grey Knights army. Best just to wait and see. Tau, for instance, have a number of rumors as to their projected release date: anywhere from April of 2012 (!) to Q3 2013 (if not later.)

Good news. This is the best time in the hobby. Full of promise. GW lets us down each time and we know it but secretly we're hoping that this is the edition that GW gives us a balanced game that can also be played competitively at tournaments. I'm loving it.

True..
Or they may try to revive the sisters of battle and chaos daemon's codicies. If they do, you could end up with an army none of the people you know have ever played with/against.

Necrons look to be a solid choice, I think they were kind of written with 6th in mind, and they have most of their model line now.

True. And their special rules can be combined to turn the whole field into dangerous terrain, if you do it right, which helps A LOT against hordes
Also, they're an MEQ army, so they are tough to kill.

I'm seriously considering Chaos. Other than that, I'll probably get Codex: Tau when(if?) it gets released and see if my 700-odd points of minis can be worked into an army.
I don't think Vanilla Marines will be updated anytime soon. After all, their codex has been the first to jump to digital format.
Orks... well... Looks like there are no plans for them. Somehow they have managed to remain solid through 5th, but don't know if they'll stay strong for long.
Nids. Oh, the Nids. Seriously, if an army (other than Sisters and DA) has been badly mistreated on 5th, it's been the Tyranids. That said their codex is still relatively fresh, and I don't see an update happening soon. Let's just hope 6th balances out things.
IG will remain strong, no matter.
My advice... Wait for Codex: Chaos and see if it allows hybrid MEQ/Cultists-Traitor IG lists. Non imperial, Space Marine Equivalents with Guard-like support units.

With my group, we're gonna have a hard time untill any codices come out, we have a SoB player with over 2k, me as a tau/tyranid player, and 2 ork players, now we have a wolf layer that just bought his first models.
Untill the codices release and some older stuff gets revamped, it's just a wierd time all around.
I'd say stick it out and wait for the books before starting.

Good plan. Judge your next army by facts, not rumours..

Well, I'd go for a CSM army since they will get a new codex soon.
