We decided to do something a little interesting with 4 players involved.
Each player started with 5000 points and had to select 4 HQ choices. The rest of the points are basically set aside to be used when selecting their army for each battle. When a battle is over, whatever points remain go back into their pool.
Setup:
There are 2 hive cities and 3 skyports. Around each hive city and sky port there are random things like manufactories, generators, etc. Approximately 20 of these are on the map.
2 players were chosen by random roll to be on planet. The other 2 arrived from space. We used the planetstrike rules for them coming in.
Goal:
Winner is the one who controls the most objectives by the last game. In the event there is a tie, one last game will determine the winner. If at any point a player is able to control 4 objectives, they auto win.
Some simple rules:
1. A tile can only be take over by an HQ choice. However, that HQ choice doesn't have to remain there. We have special flags indicating where the HQ is. An HQ choice is required to stay on an objective to control it.
2. Each battle is set at 1000 points. For each manufactory, generator, etc you control you are allowed to bring an extra 100 points to your battles. Essentially, if you are doing well then you are rewarded. These point numbers are the maximum. Each player is allowed to bring in far less if they really want.
3. The defender of each tile gets to pick their side and ALL units are allowed to infiltrate. This is to represents their ownership of the battle field and being dug in.
4. Either side is allowed to withdraw forces off of their table edge. Those points go back into their pile. Similar to an orderly retreat.
5. If a unit is forced to withdraw due to moral checks, then only half of their points go back into the pile. This represents desertion or death due to lack of medical attention.
6. Battles on tiles where an HQ is represented requires that HQ to be on the battlefield. It can't start in reserve but can be infiltrated if its on the defending side. These must meet the standard FOC. Battles on tiles where an HQ is NOT represented change the FOC to only require 2 troops choices for that player.

Some notes:
By using the point pool way of keeping track it means we can readjust our forces as the game goes on and someone isn't severely penalized for bringing a knife to a gun fight. Giving each side the ability to commit more forces to a single battle based on what they've been able to conquer rewards winners. Allowing a side to withdraw their forces is another strategical point so that a force can live to fight another day if they are being soundly beat.
It's been interesting to say the least. We have Salamanders, Tyranids, Dark Eldar and Chaos Marine forces in play.
