Hey all, I'm planning on getting into Fantasy (sooner or later) and I'm trying to come up with a fairly strong list. Doesn't need to be perfectly optimized, just needs to have some fun moments while still being fairly strong. Anyways, here's the list:

Lords - 416pts

Battle Wizard Lord - Lore of Life, Level 4 (not sure where to put him yet...)

General of the Empire - Runefang, Shield, FPA, Horse w/ Barding (Leading the Knights)

Heroes - 449pts

Captain of the Empire - BSB, FPA, Shield (slumming w/ the Swords)

Master Engineer - Plain (babysitting a Helblaster)

Master Engineer - Plain (babysitting a Helblaster)

Warrior Priest - AHW, HA (hanging out with Halberds)

Warrior Priest - GW, HA, Horse w/ Barding (hanging out with Knights)

Warrior Priest - Shield, HA (slumming with the Swords)

Core - 775pts

Halberds - 40, Full Command

Swordsmen - 30, Full Command

Inner Circle Knights - 8, Full Command, Steel Standard on the Standard Bearer

Special - 240pts

Great Cannon

Great Cannon

Rare - 620pts

Helblaster Volley Gun

Helblaster Volley Gun

Celestial Hurricanum

Steam Tank

Total - 2500pts on the nose.

Any tips, C&C, etc. is welcome. I'm brand new to the game, so, this is an early attempt at a list, and I was wondering what you all would think, and hopefully help me tighten things up before I start purchasing!

Thanks for reading and any advice!

Well... as someone who doesn't play empire or know the finer points of the army I can tell you I don't see any gaping holes is it if that helps.

It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

Now I recently started Empire myself, but I have to say from my experience so far, you have WAY too many points in characters. I tried something similar (cost effectiveness) and it really doesn't work. I would decide what kind of list you want to run, be it halberd spam, knight wave, etc and build a list off of that. I do however, like the choice in warmachines and the two engineers!

The main teason I have that many characters, is, the need for Warrior Priests to provide Hatred to everything, and, if my information isn't out dated, the ability to channel. The Lord is there to soak challenges and help squish things, since, everytime he hits he's dealing a wound. (and he'll have hatred!)

I was thinking that the 865pts is kinda steep to pay for the heroes, but with the BSB, the need for WP everywhere, a challenge soaker, and a wizard, it gets kind of expensive! :O

The only place I can see taking off is the General of the Empire. All of my other heroes are running pretty plain. I'll give it some thought.

Thank you guys!

Well, the main thing I'm thinking of, is what Weapon that'd be cheap enough to consider dropping the Runefang for, that'd give my list enough killy in other places to make up for the killy lost from the General.

Dropping Warrior Priest(s) sounds scary, since, hatred and their channel dice are a pretty big deal, imo! And dropping the lvl 4 Life Wizard to Level 2 seems like a huge loss in buff/killing power, as well.

I could probably take the General off entirely, if I needed willing to sacrifice, and give the BSB the +1 LD banner. Throw in another Knight to give them 2 ranks w/ the Warrior Priest, and I'd have 175pts to play around with. Not sure where to put the points, though, since if I'm taking it out of Lords/Heroes, no point going and reinvesting it into a Wizard.

Maybe a group of Handgunners to give my Wizard a place to hide out instead of the Halberds? Only thing I can really think of... hrm.

If you want a runefang, why not take it on a grandmaster? In the new book they can take it and get 4 attacks as opposed to the 3 of the general.

The problem with a grand master is that he costs 40-50 more points than a General of The Empire, once you get the General all barded up and such. + the 85 for the Runefang, you get a more expensive hero for one more attack! :O

It'd probably be worth it if i had a large block of knights, but with only 8, is it really? Ideally they'll be smashing through whatever they charge.

To be honest, I would drop the general and the knights entirely. 8 isn't enough. That way you can boost your swordsmen, and take a unit of chickens.

First off....if you look in the rule book (and this is looked over ALL THE TIME) you will see that you have far too many points in your lords and heroes, like really, it's against the rules.

YOu can have up to 25% in lords and heroes
Have atleast 25% in core.
50% in Special
25% in rare.

Mmk, thanks. I'll redo my list than. (Damn Battlescribe didn't catch it, either, so.. >.<

Never take a wizard without giving him an arcane item.

Wasteful and unnecessary. I agree with taking a General for Ld9 bubble, but the Runefang is a gimic frankly. Why autowound when a lance wounds on a 2+. I would go with Sword of Swift Slaying personally, your general is fast enough to get the rerolls against rank and file. Don't use him as a beatstick for characters, he is there to command, let someone else do the hunting. Take Armour of Destiny instead of full plate and take the Ironcurse Icon to protect the knights.

No magic banner? Ok, then take Talisman of Preservation.

Take one Warrior Priest, two at most.
Take Ruby Ring of Ruin on one, it helps draw out dispel and can be useful against ethereal creatures.

Try and boost the size of all three of those units. But first add a couple of small detachments of handgunners.

No problems here, however one small unit of Pistoliers for charge redirecting is good.

What do you suggest I hide the Wizard in? In one of the Handgunner units, or?

Yeah there is a couple of things wrong with what people have said, I don't mean to attack, but you need to know. You are allowed to have 25% in lords and heroes each, aka 50% can be charcters (not smart but you can do it). Also hatred from warrior priests doesn't extend to characters. Drop down to one hellblaster, you are a combat army so you are going to move into some bodies face and only need the hellblasters in certain cases. Drop down to one warrior priest in halbardiers, swordsman don't have to punch to need it. Don't use pistoliers as redirecters, too expensive, use a five man archer unit. Also give the bsb an enchanted shield, dawnstone and sword of might, more survivable and kinda choppy. With the extra points buff up all your core and most importantly play lots of games with your list, play at least 3 games before changing anything, learn how stuff works and what it's limits are.

Ah, well, I changed my list up again, before you gave that advice (though, I can't take a magic standard and magic gear).

Here it is (in spoiler form)

Spoiler:

Lords - 225pts

Battle Wizard Lord - Dispel Scroll, Level 4, Lore of Life (One of the Halberds)

Heroes - 374pts

BSB - FPA, Standard of Discipline (Swordsmen)

Master Engineer - Blank (Babysitting 1 of the helblasters)

Master Engineer - Blank (Babysitting 1 of the helblasters)

Warrior Priest 1 - Extra Hand Weapon, Heavy Armor (Halberd1)

Warrior Priest 2 - Extra Hand Weapon, Heavy Armor (Halbed2)

Core - 920pts

Halberd1 - 40men, Full Command

Halberd2 - 40men, Full Command

Swords - 50men, Full Command

Special - 610pts

Flagellants - 30, Champion

Great Cannon

Great Cannon

Rare - 370pts

Celestial Hurricanum

Helblaster Volleygun

Hellblaster Volleygun

Total: 2499.

I'm tempted to try taking out one of the Volleyguns, as suggested above, as well as a master engineer. That'd get me most of the way to a cannon. Maybe I could drop a Warrior Priest and one of the Halberd units for some Handgunners, and put the Wizard in there, and stick a Lore of Shadows level 2, as well as the Steam Tank.

What do you guys think?

And thank you all so much for the tips and advice, it's helping me out a lot!

Yeah, if I can spend 25% in seperate Lords and Heroes, I might drop them for another wizard w/ Lore of Shadow.

It's a good, solid list. I do agree that flaggelants suck and would never field them. I would drop them and go back to the steam tank. It is a fantastic tarpit.

Definitely try the list before dropping the second hellblaster. I find that two are amazing with engineers.
