Hey guys, was looking to pick up a couple of csm battleforces before 6th and was wondering what you guys thought of a 10 man possessed squad? do they just fail without any shooting? I like their models but if I don't like how they play out I'll use the bits to customize some of my other guys.

Possessed are regrettably sub-par on the battlefield, not because they lack a ranged attack, but thanks to their points cost and the random effects of possession.

Like Terminators, Harlequins, Mandrakes, and various others which should be powerful (and expensive) battle-changing elites, they are yet another example of the design studio's inability to write unit rules which are characterful and still effective. The miniatures, however, are excellent, and the long-promised new Chaos codex might yet make them worthwhile.

They are some of the most overpriced garbage in a book full of overpriced garbage. Chaos Termis cost only a little more and are infinitely more reliable.

Well maybe I'lluse them as point fillers for now and hope they get better in the next 'dex

Yeah faced some over the weekend my opponent failed to roll anything usefull and they did nothing for their points cost.

Its a real shame really because i like the models and if i brought my Iron Warriors back i'd like a few in the army.

I would mix their bits in with the other CSM in the army so you can have an army loaded with unique mutant Chaos Marines. Also, a fluff note: Iron Warriors don't like possession, or Daemons in geneeral. They'll cut off a limb if there's a tentacle growing out of it, and replace it with bionics. They're basically Chaos Agnostics and don't really serve the dark gods so much as they just hate the Imperium.

Just a couple of points,

Dont forget the icons,
icon of Khorne or tzeench is the best options imo,
4+invun or 3? attacks makes the unit very nice indeed

and even if you roll the wings option they can still fit in a transport for a rino rush

They look sexy

but are too many points and for competitive play and too random to be relied upon.

Simply put they are outperformed by other choices in our dex and seriously outmatched against other codex's (oh god please no plural for codex war).

But i have used them before with... limited success (never had them get to combat...) People like to shoot them

OH GOD THEIR GROTESQUE

Wait till you play Dark eldar

Possessed are depressingly bad, as everyone seems to agree. They simply cannot do anything that other units don't already do. Except, those other units are usually cheaper, better, or more reliable. They can fight in combat, but Terminators and Berzerkers do it better; they can be tough, but Plague Marines and Thousand Sons are tougher. You might be lucky and roll a good ability, but since that's done after deployment you don't get any real opportunity to plan for it.

Current rumours suggest that they'll get a lot better in the next codex. We'll have to wait another month or so before we start hearing more about them, though...

Whether you think the plural should be "codices" or "codexes", plurals don't require ******* apostrophes. Please learn this basic rule of English grammar.

I use a five man squad of possessed marines, for no other reason than the models are awesome. I run them with an icon of nurgle to fit the flavour of the army, I'm much more about fitting a theme than a competitive build. Anyhoo I've fielded them twice lately, against Dark Eldar they got shot to bits early (as did my entire army come to think of it) apparently my opponent targeted them as he found them scary. In another game against Imperial guard they did very nicely, chewed their way through a couple of infantry squads before succumbing to a hellhound. As much as anything it comes down to the ability dice roll. In the IG game they had an icon of Nurgle and then were fortunate enough to roll feel no pain.

I guess if you're serious about winning games then they maybe aren't the best choice. But if you want some awesome models with a properly chaos flavour they fit the bill perfectly.
