I like the idea of this. Mostly as a motivator to get things done. Problem is I play C:SM and DA. I recently put the finishing touches on the SM battleforces. One of the older ones with the Razor back and command squad, and one of the new ones with the jump infantry, scouts and rhino (mind you I went online and bought the bits to also run it as a razor back).
I have a NiB Raven wing battle force and two 3 DA bike kits that are next on the list once I finish up painting the 2 preds I recently finished modelling. I usually make it a rule to only open one box at a time until it is totally done, but I bought two preds and magnetized them both very thoroughly, and it was just easier to do both of them at the same time modelling wise.
The thing with the Raven wing set, is that you can't really make a field able army out of it. I could if I also modelled the other two boxes, but that would be cheating, and also I'm pretty sure it would border on the humanly impossible. Sprue, shave, magnetize, model, assemble, base coat, and paint 12 bikes, 1 attack bike, and a speeder would be though for me to do in a week let along 3 days. Doing a different box set would be useless to me as I don't need anything from the SM battleforce any more.
Maybe if you adjusted to rules a bit to be more accommodating to armies with either less useful battle forces, battle forces that cannot meet the HQ and 2 troop requirement, and/or players who have no need for another battle force. I love the spirit of what you are trying to do, and don't know how you could make it work like that, but if you could you might get more people on board as they will use the challenge as motivation to complete projects.
Maybe if the new starter box set comes out soon, AND it has DA as per the rumours, AND you would count that as a battle force substitute, I could get in on this. Heck, if it is also Chaos or CSM as per the rumours, I would get my brother in on it as well!
If you and your friend (and any other dakka members) decide to go for this, keep us posted! I'm interested to see how it turns out for everyone.
