I'm thinking of starting an Ork army, but before I do that I'm going to try them out in a couple games, to see if they appeal to me.

Nob 4. Painboy

I've not played Orks any more than a few matches with the AoBR Orks I've got in store, so I didn't really know what to do.
I also used a lot of different units, because I want to try them out to know what I like at first.

3 Major Things:

You're warboss has NO survivability, but he can be singled out in CC, so he NEEDS it.

Mega Armor (includes a power klaw) and a cybork body handle this.

Weirdboyz are fun, but I recommend the Warphead update to help him not to murder your own units.

I highly recommend a Big Mek with a Kustom Force Field. it costs the same as a Warphead. The KFF has a 6" radius and gives a 4+ save to vehicles within it (even 1 part of a vehicle or 1 boy in a mob) and a 5+ to non-vehicle units.

Hey, welcome to orks (even if you're just window shopping)

Your lists look fun and orky for their point levels.

If you want to bring rokkits, think about buggies or koptas instead of battle wagon.

If you're bringing a battlewagon it shouldn't be shooting (because you're moving 12" to disembark the dudes inside for an assault)
if it is shooting, it doesn't do a very good job (BS 2)

Instead, put a deff rolla on it and go to town! A rolla will do more damage than rokkits and is more fun anyway!

Wierdboy is fun. Not super competitive HQ choice, but who cares.

Put boss poles with your nobs.

Consider splitting your 10 nobz in to 2 squads. Easier to find cover, fire at 2 targets every turn. extra kill point though.

Enjoy the greenskins, they're a great way to learn the game. (which we'll all be doing again in a couple weeks..)
