Ok, yes, I have been drawn to the Ork side.
I am working on a Goff DakkaJet, and wanted to ask people's opinions, so here are some pictures and a description of where I am at currently.

This is how I started. Heavy Shoota mounts upside-down to turn the wings down, wing mounted shootas cut out and also mounted upside-down so both weapon sets eject under the wing. Most of the model airbrushed in Leadbelcher, with an airbrush coat of Ironbreaker on the upper surfaces. Goff checks on the nose, under a black anti-glare panel. Underneath on each side, shark mouth design. Vertical tail extended and then cut down in height, covered in Goff checks.

However, I quickly realised I didn't like the tail being completely covered in checks, so at that point thought of adding some Ork 'cheesecake' art to the tail. This has now also been dissmissed and I have now got just a band of checks running back the tail, and will have an aircraft number underneath that when it's finished.

I have added checks to the leading edges of the wings, and a Goff symbol to the top of one of them. There will be a squadron marking between the wings and tail, with another Goff symbol added to the underside of the opposite wing. I have some adjustments to make to both the pilot and grott gunner's heads, and am making skids for the wing-end fuel tanks. This, combined with an extension system for the nose skid, will allow the craft to land in this configuration.

What with all the highlights, rust marks, and general weathering, I recon I've covered about 1/3rd of this build, but any suggestions for improvement, anything that catches your eye as wrong (That I have not already noted as being unfinished - like the landing system) then please let me know. I am trying to get this finished by the end of the month, and want to do my best job possible on it. I have no objections to getting it as good as I can before then and coming back to improve it at a later date if I can't get it done in time.

I like the 'upside-down' wings - it does give a different look, which is always good with orks. Glad to hear you've thought of adding landing gear! - might even look good with ski-plane style landing skis on the wing ends and tail, rather than normal wheels?

I'm not totally keen on the silvery main colour, just seems a bit 'nice' for orks, but so long as you add heavy dirt and rust then it's fine.

I agree with Clang. I think that you should rough it up quite a bit more and maybe at some more brighter more vibrant colors. But I reeeeally like the upside down wing look and the landing gear.

This is why I said I'd only covered about 1/3rd of the work so far. I've concentrated on getting the metal as smooth as possible (Lots of Grots polishing it when it's not in use) and the painted symbols and stuff as rough as I can, leaving and indeed ensuring, lots of brush marks, paint build-up, etc.

I have not even started to weather it so far, and yes, lots of chips, dents, scuffs, rust, oils, and dirt are on the way. I am hoping to finish it on Saturday 30th, as my local GW store (Cambridge) is having a bit of a painting comp and that is when entries have to be in. It may be that I can't finish it all in time for that, so landing skids may be left for last in case I can't get it all done in time. Even so, I will be getting on with the weathering this weekend as I have nearly finished the markings. I am also customising the head of both the pilot and turret gunner and should be able to get them worked on by the weekend.

hey man just some tips for you since i also play goffs

first more black as this is there distinguishing colour add bolt gun metal chips and dints to make it look beat up.

second the metal needs more work i suggest a black wash then scorch brown quite liberally around any raised or recessed areas, then followed by a wash of bestial brown brushed in to the recesses and raised areas. this it a just starting to rust dirty look.

give your brass a wash of 1:1 mix dark angles green with hawk turquoise in all the recessed areas and around the raised this looks like verdigris and adds realism.

and for really rusted metal the odd plate or bit i use a scorched brown base stippled with bestial brown, then stippled with a 1:1 mix of bestial brown and troll slayer orange. then highlite edges and bolts with mythril silver also adding chips and dents.

hope this helps mate pm me if you want tips on ork skin too as i have a cool realistic way to paint them too

No update on this WIP for a while, so here goes with a big one.

Been working away at the pilot, and weathering the beast.

Still got a long way to go before Saturday. I still have to heat effect the engine and exhausts, finish the turret (Tub, grot gunner, weapons.), and edge highlight some areas of the panels and some scratches etc.

However, just to clarify, I don't play Goffs, I don't play Orks, I don't particularly play 40K even. The colour scheme I chose as a homage to planes like the Mustang and Sabre jet. This is what determined it being a Goff vehicle - it couldn't be red, so not Evil Sunz, it couldn't be yellow, so not Bad Moons, and I didn't know enough about Snake bite colours or any other Ork clans, so metal with Goff checks it was.

I really like the look of it. Yeah, it's shiny and a little clean, but hell, maybe the pilot really loves his ride. I love the checks, they look very clean and crisp. The only think I'd suggest would be to wash is with nuln oil, then do some chainmail drybrushing and some other weathering effects, but to me it looks awesome as-is. The landing pads are a nice touch to it as well!

It's not going to be so shiny and clean when it's finished. There is still a couple of cycles of wash/sponge chipping to do yet - if I get time before the judging on Saturday. I may well try and get the other things done first, and add more weathering if I get the chance in the store.

Rusting so far has been "Gryphone Sepia" around the rivets, in the recesses, and pulled backwards from areas where it would pool, followed by another coat of "Devlan Mud" in a ring around the rivets. I may well add a glaze of "Agrax Earthshade" all over to to tone it down a bit in between sponging on more chips. A|nd of course, there is no soot marks on the thing yet, either!

Niiice. Looking great. I'm glad to see this sort of old school metal paint job. I was just considerig trying one myself, but wasn't sure if it would look good.

I love what you did with the power cables. Little bits of detail like that are what makes a model, in my opinion.

I think some silver drybrushing wear on the metal would do wonders for the depth of the metal finish. It's a bit flat as is.

Some soot/smoke/oil weathering around exhaust would also really help take it to the next level.

You mentioned you still have more chipping to do, so I'm hoping to see more around the checks. It always seems to really pull the model together.

All in all, great job. I love it. It's great to see a model taking inspiration from real world sources rather than just going all "primary color" like most do.

Man, this kit is awesome and you have done it justice. It hearkens back to the ye olde days when airplanes were just brushed aluminum with minimal paintjobs (WWII) and I love the pilot.

Can't wait to see what all the weathering will look like on the finished product.

Thanks for the encouragement. Weathering has been increased - I got a brighter light after the bulb blew and I couldn't find another bulb at the same rating. Went from a 60W to a 91W equivalent and it looked way too clean. Still need to add some more chipping and edge highlighting, and paint the turret, and add some rust weathering powders, and heat discolour the exhausts, and add the soot, and ........

I haven't got time before Saturday. Gotta concentrate on the turret or swap it out for the intake plate. Dang I want to have that turret ready. No more time to take pictures until Saturday, gotta hope I can finish it instore before the deadline closes.

OK, got it finished in time - just. Would have liked more time so I could work on the base too, but mine was not the most minimal base there, so I'm not going to worry.

Anyway, final pics of it in-store.

Very nice! Much better with the weathering. In some of the earlier shots I could make out a couple of mold lines, not so much in the weathered shots but it's deff worth checking all parts when cleaning.

Currently I'm cleaning up a Mantic Orx Raptor and it's the worst for mold lines I have ever seen!!

OLDCell, where are you referring to? If you can see a rectangular shape around the wing mounted shootas, that's because I have cut them out and swapped them over. Even though I went through about 5 sessions of filling and sanding, every time I started to paint, I could see those rectangles, so I re-filled and re-painted. I have no idea what I would have had to do to get those absolutely smooth looking.

I also had no time to deal with the part lines across the top and bottom of the fuselage, the bottom one running right through the engine too.

Most of the parts in this kit have been well designed, but I was a little disappointed that better moulding technology was not used, especially given GW's prices. Movable cores mean that there really is no excuse not to have hollow gun barrels on kits like this, and producing the engine as a series of rings rather than a ring and two half rings with the main body of the engine in two parts combined with the fuselage halves makes very little sense.

4th image in first post the guns have a seem or mold line down the middle, the other I think is definately a seem along the top of the fuselage, but you covered that in your response.

If the guns are two parts and it's a join seem then liquid green stuff is great for smoothing out those. Obviiously at this stage it's done and dusted.

But even still it's a great model and great paint job and weathering/aging.

I'll admit, looking at the first pictures, I didn't like the Leadbelcher all over it. But you did an amazing job with the weathering, I love it!

Finally managed to get in store last night and asked about the flyer painting competition. Little dissapointed that I only managed third. The Necron flyer that won, I'd have voted for myself - especially as the guy that painted it has only been doing it for around 5 months. The colour scheme was spot on in my opinion, sand style colours for the plates with metal accents.

Still, it has made me determined to do an even better job with my necron air force which I am about to start.
