Now not a thread to discuss hate on 6th edition, I have a question. What if the major changes we are hearing about are hated by everyone. From what it seems the game is going into massive overhaul. Everything people have known for years are changing. So the question is this, if 6th is hated so much that it will damage sales, will GW remove it for further revision?

If it "fails", they'll just revise it and call it an "update" or 7th ed.

If it is hated, then people just won't play it (except for the die-hard tourney crowd and alpha-sheep whom MUST play the newerest edition), GW will take a hit, adjust and adapt. Meanwhile, those people who won't play it are either playing 5th or earlier editions, or other games instead.

Yep, I can imagine GW printing something like 6.5th edition if 6th edition is a total failure, removing the worst elements, fixing any major flaws and saying "you have to buy this book if you want to play in tournaments now."

I don't see why people would hate it, or am I the only one that loves the edition change every few years. It keeps the game fresh, makes new units good, good units maybe not so, people change the armies they use and the way they play. There will always be a few rules that people hate, yet some might love.

I for one have invested to much in this hobby, just to throw it all away because I cant adapt to a few rule changes.

If the majority of rumors are true, I think I'll really like it. If not, we'll play 5th (its like keeping XP and skipping over Vista right to 7).

People asked this exact same thing back when 5th broke. If you want an answer, go back and read the threads from 2008.

some people will hate having to adapt (power gamers, WAAC ones and normal ones) and others will relish the new challenge (same people as above), i personally dont like some of the changes in the rumours and i do like some of the others, when the book drops im looking foward to seeing what was true and what was total fanboy bs lol

Oh, so you have read the entire 6th edition book have you, from cover to cover, and decided it sucks?

I don't think so, and if they do, at least each time it will be a different kind of suck, so its still new and fresh, no ones forcing you to play, don't panic

he is talking about if they leave a majority of the rules the same, then he thinks it will suck.

I agree with you and can't wait to sit down with a copy of the rules and spend all night reading them.

Actually aside from the buildings being paid for by points, and balance issues from detatchments (specifically HQ powers) a lot of the new changes look pretty good to me.

I cannot wait to see the changes. I would like to see a severe power shift from the world of Grey Knights to something else like Eldar some how... I do not see that happening thought as MEQ is GW's baby.

That being said. When 8th hit WFB, you had a massive bail out for 40k. A lot of GT calibre players just walked and went for others games. Sometimes they wander back, but right now in the NE you are not having the 100 man GT's for WFB you used to, your seeing more multiple system GT's. If 40k 6th does not go over well, you will see the same thing.

People will move onto WMHD, infinity, dust, or something else. There is more from the wargaming hobby other then GW games. If 6th doesn't go over well, people will change and adjust. There is always opportunity to see other things out there. GW thinks they are a flagship.. but that is slowly changing.

at my flgs we'll probably use 5th edition for the first week or 2 to giv eus all time to read it. if people donn't like it or neither player has 6th edition yet i'd have no probelm playign them with 5th for a while as long as they are using 5th edition codexed or earlier (heck as a mostly ork player i'm using a 4th edition)

its just like D&D or any other game you can always try to use the old vertion. it'll limit opponents after a while but if it is just plain bad you might be ale to get alot of people wanting the old vertion or like D&D combat and tactics players who just want somethign different and much more complicated

If people really hate it:

1. They'll quit and play something else.
2. Their game group/club will just keep playing 5th. There are several groups that claim to be playing 4th, still.
3. They'll suck it up and deal with it.

While I liked 5th ed a lot, 5th was not as tight a rules set as it could have been. This leaves room for 6th to slip into the cracks of 5th.

If 6th fails, going back to 5th will be unacceptable because it was not an ideal system to begin with. And with what rumors have been saying lately, 6th is not a polished 5th ed. Thus 6th will be introducing new cracks into the rules, instead of fixing existing cracks.

Even if I don't like it I'll still play it, my local GW is pretty much the only place I play so i'll have too.

I am not not sure from what I have seen so far whether or not I am going to enjoy it or not. It seems a little more complicated to, but that is just me, i'm still not 100% sure on everything from 5th. I'm a bit gutted in a way

I look forward to getting my mitts on it but am apprehensive.

I'll just wait to see the rules in full before judging.

doesn't mater if it is hated or not, at this point people are bored with 5th. Any change is welcome.

I really wouldn't call it a "massive overhaul" tbh. Fair few changes, but far from a overhaul it seems.

Eldar used to be the OP in the edition of 4th edition. , 3.5 had Chaos, 3.0 I can't remember.

Actually it's kinda the first real time that MEQ and imperium have been op in 5th now that I think about it.

Imperial guard has been somewhat low tier, and the MEQ has been around middling.

You aren't the only one, unfortunately. That's what GW depends on.

It keeps sales fresh. There is no more compelling reason to constantly change the rules for 40K than there is to constantly change the rules for chess, Monopoly, or Texas Hold 'Em.

There are plenty of alternative ways to "keep the game fresh", if you're so worried about a massively multi-variable game getting "stale." Try playing missions from previous editions, or from tournaments, or make up your own. Try playing more Apocalypse, or Planetfall or any other of the various campaign books that have come out over the years. Try running campaigns from other 40K sites like BoLS.

IMO the only reason to make "good units maybe not so" is poor rules design in specific Codices *ahem, Ward, ahem* Such changes should be effected by FAQ or by revision of specific offending Codices, not by changing the entire game in order to compensate.

Any rules that need to be adjusted should be fixed without making some other existing rule in the game worse (as opposed to fixing specific Codices that fail their Ward saves)..

False dichotomy. You can play without "adapting" to sales-driven rules changes.

Games Workshop is a business, like all, their main goal is to make money.

Yes it is a multi-variable game, the problem is, so many variables are just so bad that no-one ever takes them, so we get stuck seeing the same list over and over.

If 6th makes the game even slightly more balanced would that not be an achievement?

As a side, I really dont see the hate towards Matt Ward and his codex's. Ok, so GK might be a little stronger than average, but if you look out there, people have been able to beat them, and beat them well. In my opinion he has done a great job with Necrons.
