There are some real positives in your painting, and for first models you've done really well. You've laid down a nice neat flat color that's consistent on all your models. That might not sound like much, but it's a huge hurdle in miniature painting. It will not take much at all to take them to the next level, and having those basics down so well means you have a few options. Try a wash, a dip, or a simple highlight - all would look great.

i am painting with enamels as opposed to games workshop's acrylics so that might also be the reason its smoother, due to not having a base coat??

Like your bases and the Dreadnought banner.
