Cool lists. The JSA one is really close to the one my mate played at the beggining (watch out for that extra point since the lists have to be spot on points, you can be under but not over the limit)

@bou: that JSA took me forever just getting it to that! In a friendly starter game I wouldn't worry about i too much anyway.

@VS: Good idea! I'll try to add it tomorrow. It's time ti head home.

My starter box was a bit different from this. It was older and had a sticker on it saying, "UK Version"

It has:

3 x Zhanshi w/ Combi
1 x Ninja w/ Combi
1 x Shaolin w/ Combi
1 x Lt. Hisien Multi Rifle and MSV2

I like how it's a good challenge to do lower point lists. I regularly do 300pt but lower pts is fun too.

Good starters, guys. I particularly like Valthonis' Imperial Service starter- but for a beginner, I'd leave out the spitfire/sniper blister (save dough and keep your focus for the first few games). Then add the spitfire/sniper and a Garuda once your enemies begin adjusting to avoid smoke tactics.

CDK's starters win for being cheap and keeping one focussed though. Plus then your army will probably get painted before buying new stuff, meaning less hordes of unpainted silver.

Infinity: Way, way better than 40K and more affordable to boot!

So I'm really new to infinity and have been spending the past few hours reading up on it and trying to figure out the rules and how army building works. I want to go Yu Jing and I like the idea of starting with the imperial service box, but in CDK's starter army for them he includes a unit from the Aleph force, can someone explain how that works?

The Imperial Service is a sectorial army (specialized list) within the larger Yu Jing faction. The IS can't field all of the units within the Yu Jing list, but it has a larger availability of certain units (like the Celestial Guards, the various Imperial Agents, Hsien, etc), and can field certain ALEPH units (such as the Garuda).

oh ok, thank you
that makes a lot more sense then just random units added in to fill in points

If you go to the Infinitythegame.com and the download section, you can download a .pdf of the Human sphere Army lists. At the end they have a chart of what sectorials can take and how many.

@Zomjie: now that I look at these selections again, I see a deficiency in the ISS one (no offense CDK). I'm going to recommend that, instead of the Garuda he recommends you pick up, you instead buy more Celestials (with a smoke launcher), then a box of Kuang Shi (the human-bomb troopers). That's a bit more like the force that valthonis suggests.

Here are the reasons for that:

-The Garuda is a remote. To field a remote, you need a hacker or a TAG. To make one of the Celestials a hacker would cost another 12 points that aren't included in CDK's calculations. Also, hacking (and Airborne Drop for that matter) are kinda advanced rules that you might want to expand towards, rather than having them be necessary for for beginner games (not the demos obviously- just play your first couple games with a couple light infantry with no special rules- it's easier to learn that way).

-Even more importantly, with the models CDK suggests you only get 7 orders (his other forces have more, which is better). In Infinity, your order pool is very important. A 7-order list is hard to play unless your opponent also has very few models/orders. Casualties will cripple you fast. As a beginner, maxxing out your orders (while still having some decent troops in your force to hit with) is very helpful.

With those points in mind, I'd recommend your first purchase after the starter-box be the Celestial with Kuang Shi controller/LGL (and whatever else comes in that blister- another Celestial I think). That gets you a link team of Celestials and a smoke launcher- and learning to use smoke is very important for Imperial Service. Having your Hsien shoot through smoke (thanks to his MSV2) is Dirty Trick Numero Uno for the Imperials.

After that, buy a box of Kuang Shi. They'll get your orders up fast, and a re really powerful for their points. They also give a newbie a chance to learn how to use Impetuous troops, which are a core mechanic spread across all the armies. They're also really creepy and drive home the fact that the ISS are... uh, "morally ambiguous".

Later, definitely get the Garuda (although I'd recommend an HMG rather than the basic combirifle model).

Oh, and if you're playing starter games and need to keep points down, I highly recommend leaving the Pheasant Rank Agent at home. He's very expensive and hard to use well. Later, he's great (once your opponents have gotten good at spotting and killing Lt.s, and once there's a lot of heavy infantry/TAGs around to be cut down with monofilament). But for intro games, ditch him and you'll be happy you did.

Remember though I was making it simple and they must already have figures for them. No stand-ins. Boxed set plus X. Of course there's better builds you can make but these are strait out of the box ready to play without any confusion as to what is what.

Sorry about the Garuda. I didn't realize the Garuda was like a regular remote and needed a hacker. I don't know Aleph well.

Here's a revised one. Again it's the main boxed set plus one. The spitfire Celestial comes in a blister with the Sniper Celestial.

IMPERIAL SERVICE
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

Imperial Service Boxed Set

GROUP 1 (Regs: 7/Irrs: 0):

2x CELESTIAL GUARD Combi Rifle / Pistol, Knife (13)

CELESTIAL GUARD Boarding Shotgun / Pistol, Knife (13)

WU MING Boarding Shotgun, Grenades / Pistol, CCW (36)

IMPERIAL AGENT (Chain of Command, X Visor) Combi Rifle + E/Mitter / Pistol, Monofilament CCW (43)
Martial Arts L3, Chain of Command, X Visor

HSIEN MULTI Rifle / Pistol, AP CCW (60)
Martial Arts L2, Multispectral Visor L2

Plus this:

CELESTIAL GUARD Spitfire / Pistol, Knife (20 | 1)

198 Points | SWC: 1

I'd still suggest the blister with the Celestial packing a smoke LGL/Kuang Shi device (which requires no stand-ins: not quite sure what you mean there) before anything else. Learning to use smoke is key to playing ISS.

Some have suggested figures that are not out yet so you would need a stand in.

I can agree about the Celestial and Kuang Shi but that requires buying the blister with the Celestial as well as a box set of the Kuang Shi. A pretty big investment.
