People are assuming allies will be grossly imbalanced...I fail to see how. You're screwing up the composition of your army, having to take a troop and HQ of another army that will probably be deadweight and will not sync with the rest of your list, and essentially paying over the odds for whatever it was you wanted.
As a guard player I can't think of anyone I'd want to ally with...terminators would be nice sure, but at ~400 points(termies+HQ+upgrades) I'd rather have 3 Vendettas or 2 Russes and a heap load of melta guns.

Ummm because GW can barely balance codices internally (units within a codex) or eternally (codex vs. codex). What makes you think a small caveat like needing a min HQ and troop is going to balance combo-cheese?

I cannot wait to take Mephiston in my SWs. Of course I'll remember to also take a min squad of scoring assault marines for good measure...

I have a love /hate relationship with anything green.

If you'd rather have Mephiston than a squad of Long Fangs, you're a bad player, pure and simple.
This seems to be a recurring theme amongst people who claim that allies will ruin 40k... a)an assumption that GW are stupid and/or incompetant, b)little understanding of how to play the game as it is.

Can I ally with Space Wolves as Eldar? If so, I'm never going to use Dark Reapers which are massively inferior. That kind of thing.

(not that I use Dark Reapers in the first place, but you get the idea)

You still need mandatory 2 Troops.

It's more because it can plug holes in a codex's weakness. All the codecies all need a weakness or 2 to give potential for all (most) armies to defeat them. Other issues are with fluff and as stated, creating super-cheese combos the likes cannot be made by a single army.

1 troop from what I have read.

Weaknesses are in a list, not a codex. If you take away a part of your army's strength and replace it with a polar opposite from another army, you've just made yourself much weaker...

Let's wait to see what the actual rules are on this before getting too carried away with this 'problem'.

Also, I'm fairly sure that this is already being discussed somewhere?
