Subject: Stripping problem??

Hi all, I got a load of second hand painted dark elf warriors recently. I put them in a bath of Dettol to strip them which has worked fine on metal mini's
but these plastic ones, the undercoat has turned into tar. What should I do give them another bath in the Dettol or are they useless?
Thanks for any help.

Hmm. I wonder what they were undercoated with, that is weird.
If it were me, I'd run them under hot water and scrub with a toothbrush... The physical removal may get you further, then another dettol bath and scrub, until the junk is all gone. You may need to get a toothpick or something to clean the faces and such, to scrape gunk out of crevices.

Cool thanks, tried the hot water and toothbrush and it is now clinging to my hands.
I may need a dettol bath by the end

Are you using Dettol with water? If you are then I suggest you use it neat and don't use any water with it.
I have had the same problem before and it really does stick to everything. If you let the miniature dry properly and just use neat dettol to both soak and rinse the miniature, you should find that the 'tar' will scrub off in the neat dettol with a brush.
Once you are completely happy that the miniature is as stripped as you can get it THEN rinse in water but don't use the brush or it will just gunk up again.

Yeah it was neat but then I used warm water to try and clean them. Back in the bath they go tomorrow and then I will give them a scrub in it.
Thanks Inso and Gymnogyps.

I find stuff like this is very trial and error sometimes. I have no idea why sometimes you can dilute the dettol but others, you have to use it neat.
The thing is, dettol is really good at paint stripping and it is worth trying things to save on cost... unfortunately, you need a messy bowl for the soaking and initial clean off and a clean bowl for the final scrubbing of the remaining bits.
I also recommend wearing gloves because it not only dries out your skin but also stinks to high heaven and is a wotsit to remove the smell from your hands (unless you like the clean, fresh, medicine-y smell of dettol...)

I had the same problem earlier today. :(
Good luck with the re-dunking them, hopefully the tar isn't harder to remove than the paint.

if you have them in dettol but then scrub them with water the primer will become very greasy...
i guess you need some overcleaner now. or you can try 98% alcohol

You just werent finished put them back into the soup, and scrub lightly... it all comes awy real easy, if you have to try too hard put it back in.... at some stage move to fresher cleaner dettol fluid and keep scrubbing the mini untill there is zero paint remaining. Make sure there is zero paint remaining before you introduce the water otherwise the paint turns to a sticky mess that clings to everything and will not come away from the model without another soaking in the dettol.
