Hey,

I've started painting an imperial guard army and I was wondering if anyone had any tips for painting the muzzle of a melta gun to look "heat damaged" from firing?

Cheers in advance

“Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

I just drybrush Black around the tip of the muzzle.

The way I do it on higher level models is I use tin bits or bronze and drybrush it on the front half of the barrel. Then I use a purple wash or glaze and lightly put that over the first fourth of the barrel. Then I do a very light drybrush with black over the whole thing, or I use black pigment.

OK, cool, I'll give it a go and see how it looks. Thanks for the help

Hi there! I just use three washes over boltgun metal to get a heat stained look, you can of course add black or soot to the ends of you like but I like these guns to burn clean :-) there's an example of the result about 3/4 the way down this page (past the penguin) it's asurmen blue on the end, then leviathan purple in a smaller band and finally gryphone sepia to finish it off.

hope it helps you!

I paint the gun as normal. Then I paint a brown wash that you like from the front of the barrel to about halfway back. Then paint a heavy black wash (or a thin drybrush) over the top starting at the front, for about half of the brown.

That gives a really nice burnt look, with brownish metal discoloration underneath sooty material.

While it looks good on Meltaguns, it's especially awesome looking on flamers.

Ron, who runs the From The Warp blog and post here occasionally, did a couple articles on heat and soot stained barrels. They are a damn fine read (as is everything on his blog). His advice is similar to what a few people have said, but I'll throw it up here any way.
