The impending release of 6th ed 40k has set tongues wagging on the question of allies.

Which makes me wonder why they they are not seen more often in fantasy?

Because the Allies rules in Fantasy is for games with more than 2(1v1) players. They don't allow you to bring Wood Elves with your Empire, for example.

Actually the rules do say you can have one player run both armies if you want but it's still two separate forces and double the work.

I do think that using a single FOC for running allies would be a good idea. From a sales standpoint it is ludicrous for GW to not do it. If my High Elves army could take a contingent of Empire troops, or some Lizardmen(within reason, perhaps no Lords from the allied army) then GW would have more money from be buying the units I want to include.

Then again GW ignores a lot of ways they could be making money. Army specific Magic Cards being one of them. They'd sell a pack of those every time someone bought the respective book, and I'm sure the markup on them is huge. My local GW manager has pushed the idea to Mark Wells, as well as his region manager and the US distribution manager. It's an easy $5 or 6 that they are missing out on. And how much do 6 or 7 cards cost to produce? Pennies I'm sure.

They have some Army specific cards, but for some reason when they release them it's a one time release and that's it. It makes a certain bit of sense with things like Dreadfleet and Space Hulk, those cost a lot of money to produce, and the gaurantee that they'll sale isn't that great. Magic cards WILL sell though, because their damn convenient. It makes no sense at all to limit the amount of them that you can buy, when your still trying to get people to buy other products that they can be used with.

That's what Aerethan is saying: make them permanent additions to the line like the new 40K ones and the standard Battle Magic box.

Because allies aren't exactly a good idea for most armies, generally you add more of the stuff you need.

It's not like 40k where you can easily take a secondary army and have them mesh well regardless.

Yes, you're correct. I did mean to say more than 2 armies.
