I recently picked up one of the citadel spray gun with the canned propellant and i honestly don't understand why everyone hates it. I had not one problem did what it was suppose to do and did it fast and better than if I had used a brush. whats your guys opinion/experience with the spray gun?

Because it is notorious for breaking down if I remember correctly. Though some of it I think is them buying it and expecting it to do everything that an airbrush can do. At most it's just like buying a spray can of whatever colour it is; applies it fast and doesn't necessarily last all that long.

I wouldn't buy one simply because it's a ridiculously expensive way to get an airbrush.

You don't have to buy that many cans of compressed air before you reach a point where you might as well have just bought a compressor.

The reason there is so much hate on it is it has only one use. Where a regular dual action airbrush can be used to do so much more than the spray gun. Also the canned air gets expensive when you use it more than a few times. Its also cheaply made, it will only last for a few runs before breaking at some point. There are better options for slightly and I do mean slightly more money.

Not sure why. I use it from time to time when my hand/wrist is acting up (due to old age and injuries). I think is is great to use for a base coat on your models and a detailed air brush for fine work.

The canned propellent is an expensive option. My suggestion to you is to get yourself an air compressor. Save money in the long run.

I wouldn't mind so much about the price if it was a halfway decent product. But it is designed with siphoning money in mind.

ya i've noticed but i payed 5 bucks for mine because i had some store credit from a tournament at my gaming store so i don't really care if it breaks at this point

5 bucks isnt bad and for basecoating large vehicles, large amounts of minis or large minatures it isnt bad, but if you compare it to an actual airbrush its crap.

Do not fall for the "our products are the best there are because they have GW stamped on them and you need to have them now" routine that the employees try to cram down your throat every time you walk into the store.

Any of the "clones" of fancy name brands are good enough to learn with. Google search, check Amazon, and Ebay and you will find some decent stuff at reasonable prices.

The reason for the hate is that its made by GW and a lot of people here would hate a cure for cancer if GW made it.

If you dont shop online, have no other model shops around and you just need something to basecoat stuff quicker then why not give it a go.

The only really important thing is that its useful to you, enjoy it.

The GW spraygun is frankly poor quality, overpriced, junk. For £15, you can buy a dual action airbrush that is fine for learning (heck, I still use it - other than being a bit temperamental viz a viz clogging and cleaning, it's fine). I'd really like a H&S Evolution 2 in 1, but I haven't been able to siphon the cash away from the wife yet. :-/

I am a money is no object kind of guy - so long as I get what I'm paying for. If I'm paying top dollar, I want a top product.

One thing being that if GW did make a cure for cancer, they wouldn't advertise it AT ALL, and they would market it towards people who just recently got cancer instead of those who've had it for years.

And the mark up would be astronomical. And then GW would make an IV that was all Grimdark and sell it in some Apothecary-esque container, which would be the only way to administer said cure.

No hate here, just knowledge and experience - people don't like seeing other people waste time, money or both.

You can buy a basic airbrush for less than $20.

You can buy a basic airbrush AND compressor for less than $100. either of those will last you a long time and do tons more than the spray gun, which is really an external mix no control airbrush.

That's really not the issue here.

It's a cheap piece of plastic that winds up costing you more than most people realise when they buy it... just like any of the other propellant-in-a-can sprayguns that have popped up over the years. It's not GW that makes it a failure of a product, just the cost of compressed air.

Is this the sort of thing to start with - for priming/basecoating large amounts of miniatures?

Basically thin down paint, pop in in and blast away?

i have that one! its actually working pretty good for me. although i heard some other opinions as well

Two things wrong with the GW spray gun. First is that you buy it with cans of compressed air and not with a compressor. Second is that it is a single action airbrush and not a dual action airbrush. Only the airflow is controlled, not the paint flow. This limits what you can do with it.

In all honesty, the GW Spraygun was an overpriced version of what other companies (like Testors) have been offering for years. Good for a basecoat, not so hot if you're wanting a 'real' airbrush.

Stupid question here, buuuut.

If I have an industrial style air compressor, like, one that is used to hook up to the shopvac, would it be possible to hook that up to a spray gun brush thing?

Maybe if you have the right connector, but I'd be pretty careful and try to keep it weak. May break it pretty easily that way.

+1 Breotan that is exactly the reason

Taking the fact that it is made by GW out fo the equation, a single action spray gun/airbrush will never achieve the same degree of control as a dual-action. This will therefore limit the effects you can generate and the precision of the work and result in overspray and wasted paint.
