Greetings from deepest, darkest Buckinghamshire (England)!

Cool forum - liking what I've seen so far! Started wargaming back in the late 80s when the world was a better place... nowadays, I'm a lot more interested in the design side of things. For those who are interested (or can't be bothered to stop reading) here's a short paragraph about me:

I am a freelance model designer, with a background in architectural model making, sculpting and concept art. I have worked in the film, advertising and prototyping industries. My recent and current projects include architectural design for industrial, steampunk and the broader science fiction genre; character concept design for 30mm miniature sculptures and design work relating to an upcoming steampunk tabletop wargame.

I love creating stuff but have great difficulty sometimes catching all the random thought molecules as they bounce off my cranium.

I'm sure you'll all make me feel very welcome! (So you can stop pointing that bolter at me now).

Peace! (erm... I mean war)

Thanks for the warm welcome!

When I get the chance, I'll definitely upload some images of my models, Chaos Legionnaire. In the meantime, I have just started a blog http://www.chilledmonkeybrains.blog.com on the subject of model wargame scenery; in card to begin with, but moving onto bespoke scratch-built terrain pieces (using a range of media from plastic and resin to wood, metal and beyond).

Ultimately, I want the blog to evolve into a depository of high-quality model design, with a selection ranging from free-to-download PDF card model buildings right through to bespoke designs for individual clients.

I guess my main interests are making buildings, ruins, battlefield detritus etc for sci-fi games, ranging from steampunk industrial manufactories to the grim gothic architecture of the 41st millennium.

Really glad to have (finally) got around to joining this mahoosive community!

Your job sounds pretty fun, perhaps you should start a dakka P&M blog with your stuff.
Unless you've already done so

Interesting. Chilled monkey brains, whilst popular in Cantonese cuisine, are seldom found in Dakka Dakka.

Welcome! Live anywhere near Aylesbury? I used to live near there, but have since moved to Oxford, and am soon to be moving to Lincoln.

Yeah, I guess it does! It's certainly nice to do something you're passionate about

I'll definitely have a look at setting up a P&M blog at some point. It's nice to be able to share WIP shots and commentary with others (great for getting critical advice, whilst hopefully passing on tips at the same time). It's all about sharing the knowledge!

Aylesbury's probably about 15 miles from where I live, so not too far!

Thanks for the welcomes, guys!

Well tell me when you set up your blog. Sounds intresting, may I ask how you learnt that skill?

Hmm... well there's a long and a short answer to that one, but I think I'll save the long one for another day. Here's the short one:

Started when I was a sprog by drawing and making stuff, then gradually got more refined as I got through school and college. The culmination of educational qualifications came with a degree in Model Design, during and after which I got work ranging from rapid prototyping to making props for the film industry. Basically, I took something I loved doing and managed to earn a few quid doing it

My project at the moment (outside work in my 'spare time'), of which I now have a foetus of a blog, is to create loads of model terrain pieces for sci-fi wargames. Only just started out on this one, but I have a veeeeeeery long list of architectural pieces I would like to make. Then I'll be giving some downloadable 'papercraft' templates away for free before moving on (hopefully!) to some more substantial pieces in resin and possibly other materials. For me, it's anything from ammo crates to imperial fortresses.

Basically, I like making models!

Pretty darn awesome really, I'm looking for someway to get into anything that I might enjoy without taking a academic route (Failed me so-far) would it be possible through OU?

Anyway, I will set my dreams by the roadside for now and take a dullard job and accumulate some money for my dreams.

Thanks.

I don't think OU do too much in the way of art & design stuff, although they do have a wide array of different courses and you can even design your own degree, if that's something you wanted to go for.

As far as advice goes, all I can really say is if there's something you enjoy and you are good at it, then put your all into achieving that dream (yeah, I know - pretty cheesy but it's true). It may not be easy as there are often many other life factors to take into account, but if you don't want to make do with a 'dullard job' then go for it!
