Hi all! So I've been out of the hobby for quite awhile (6 or 7 years at least) and I'm just getting back into it. Sadly my local hobby store has closed during this time so apart from an hour drive I really can only pick up stuff online. Therefore I spent a lot of last night browsing the GW website and I'm way excited to see all the awesome new models (I'd never seen Tomb Kings for instance) however I see that they've changed up the paints a ton. Anyway, I picked up a few things to start with and a few random paints (I model a lot of different stuff so have a huge selection of non-gw paints at home a well) but I'm a bit confused. What's the different with the layering paints? Layer 1 layer 2 etcc? are they just different colors or are they of an actual consitency? Also, whatever happened to the inks and washes? It wouild be great if someone could fill me on what's been happening paint wise for the last few years, thanks folks!

The paint line is designed to be simple for new painters.

The idea is: Primer, Base, Shade, Layer, perhaps another layer, Glaze.

The old Foundations were expanded and are now called Base paints.
The regular colors were thinned down and expanded, now called Layers. Washes were slightly reformulated and are now called Shades.

Inks died years ago, but Coat d'Arms still sells them.

Personally I only use certain Base and Shade colors from GW anymore, for everything else I use Vallejo or Reaper.

New paints are both different color and different consistency from the ones 6-7 years back. But you can just use "base" and "layer" ranges the same way old paints were used, they are the same acrylic paints, not really that different from the old ones and from each other. Other ranges are more specialized.

They supposedly have better coverage and they dry out less.
