I am just starting out, and don't plan on dabbling in the 6th ed, at least not for awhile. I play Eldar, and their codex is, I believe, from the 4th ed, but quite playable in the 5th.

For those folks who've gotten (or get, soon anyway) the 6th edition, are there any rules that might apply to new codices that won't work well in the 5th? Supposing my E get some love, and I want to check out their new Codex (which may not be for a year or more... Sigh) - do you think I'd have to switch over to 6th ed?

I play...

Sigh.

Who am I kidding? I only paint these days...

Regardless of how many people say they won't switch when 6th edition releases, I assure you, the vast majority of players will in fact, play 6th edition. Large events like Adepticon will utilize 6th edition. Showcase Comics owner (Don't want to butcher his name, but an absolute excellent man for the hobby) has already listed an event for 6th edition on or about the day it drops.

You are free to continue playing 5th edition for as long as you want and as long as you can find an opponent, the latter of which will likely be difficult, unless you have a group of players that feel the same way you do.

Codex Eldar will certainly be impacted by 6th edition. Some ways it will hurt them and other ways it might even help them. I think the GW FAQs and Errata will be just as important to Eldar (and all the other outdated codexes) as the actual new rule book. Nobody will know for sure until we have everything in hand and time to digest it.

As you note, I reckon it's too early to tell. But I am very curious nonetheless if anyone hears any news...

And though I do appreciate your enthusiasm for 6th ed, I play in my man cave, with a small number of my socially maladjusted friends (probably should have said that up front!), so won't be trying 6th edition any time soon, but might be tempted to check out a new codex if one were to come out.

I play...

Sigh.

5th edition codexes in 6th are most likely going to play the same way that 4th ed played in 5th.

Some were hurt, some were helped, and some were rather unaffected.

As for Eldar in general... it's going to depend on exactly what your army is made of. Fast skimmers all seem to be getting a boost. Rangers/Pathfinders should be quite a bit more powerful. Warp Spiders will become better in killing light vehicles. But, Banshees are going to be hurt against 2+ armor. And, psykers are changing somewhat dramatically, but no one is sure of the details yet.

A 6th edition codex will probably not work in 5th like you are hoping without some serious elbow grease to make things work. At that point, you might as well just use one of the fan-dexes that are flying around the web.

Oh. You mean backplayable as in will 6th codexes work in 5th. That was the opposite of what I thought.

In that case... no. You'll have to do one of the following:

1) Update to 6th.
2) Freeze your playgroup in time. No new codexes that will come out will apply.
3) HEAVILY house rule your game... probably to the point where it becomes de facto 6th... or it stops resembling Warhammer all together.
