I've recently tried using Testor's Dullcote on some models that had parts painted with Vallejo Liquid Gold. Usually the dullcote gives me the exact finish I'm looking for but when applied to the VLG, it takes away too much of the natural finish and leaves it looking like a normal acrylic paint.

Has anyone else run into this problem and found a solution?

Or can anyone suggest a different type of varnish for models painted almost entirely in VLG colors?

I'd suggest painting all non VLG items first, then varnish, then paint the liquid gold parts and use a brush on varnish in either satin or gloss.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I did for the few models that had a small part here and there that were painted in VLG.

I have about 20 sanguinary guard ready to be sprayed, I'm just not sure what I should use at this point.

Dullcote will flatten out any and all metallic paints, the effect isn't exclusive to VLG. You can try a satin varnish, it will be a little glossy but nowhere as much as a straight gloss coat. Krylon makes their Crystal Clear acrylic spray varnish in satin(powder blue and white label), you can try that. If you go the brush route Vallejo satin is very good , so is WIndsor Newton Artists Acrylic UV Satin varnish.

Hope this helps.

Satin varnish is your friend if you are doing Sanguiary Guard, Grey Knights, any model that is painted with mainly metallic paints. It protects the metallics and does not dull them.

If you have a model that only had a little bit of metallic paint on it, use the dullcoat and just touch up the metallics.

I'm assuming the VLG is your top highlight on the gold metals?

Just dullcote the lot before applying VLG. Then put the final highlights on the metals.

there is more then one color VLG, you can build up the entire color with VLG exclusively

you could just varnish now, touch up the gold as a highlight, then brush gloss coat over it

Can you suggest a specific brand? Have you used it yourself?

I use the Vallejo Satin Varnish sprayed through an airbrush. I believe they also make a satin varnish in a spray can if you don't use an airbrush. It can also be painted on with a brush. There is a picture of some Grey Knights I did in my gallery that I also used satin varnish on them. Good luck!

I think Liquitex also makes a satin varnish, but I'm not 100% sure.

Yeah, I have an airbrush and a bottle of the Vallejo satin varnish. I'll try that, thanks for the help!
