Luke Retallack joins us in the third chair. Luke is the man behind the mic at Worlds End Radio podcast and has been a force in organizing western Australia miniature wargaming for many years.
Up first Luke, Craig, and Russ have lured Raef "Hollywood" Granger back onto the show to discuss his kickstarter documentary project. How is it going? What are his goals? Is kickstarter working out? Raef gives us his honest assesment and gets questions and advice from both the hosts and listeners via Twitter and Facebook.
Later we tackle a new concept for Mulling Mechanics: Metagame Psychology. What kinds of psychological techinques do players use in games to get the edge?
All that and our other not-too-horrible segments including:
- Total Fan Girl
- Do You Ever Notice
- When you wish upon a game
- & More

About an hour into the show so far and really enjoying Craig on painkillers. I'm not sure why, but it's hilarious (in a good way)!

Ok, finally finished. Loved the mental meta game segment, I try to use this in Malifaux. Make a power seem really important, get your opponent to use that high card, then hit them with that really powerful ability and watch them suffer!
Regarding DYEN and Prometheus, I'm finding hat as much as I feel that if Craig likes a game, so will I, I can't say the same about movies (I'm still stunned by the Wanted vs Wall-E discussion of so long ago). While I don't find Prometheus to be perfect (I feel the same about Blade Runner), I do feel that it is one of the most important sci-fi films of the past decade and will eventually be regarded in the same vein as Blade Runner. Yeah, it has flaws, but it asks some very important questions and doesn't spoon feed you the answers, for good or for bad making you think about them for yourself. This movie is about the search for God, and I'll put the most important questions it asks behind a spoiler tag:
I'd rather see a movie that asks tough questions without giving answers (Inception is also in this category for me), than any "Summer Blockbuster" any day of the week!

Wow. Great show! Luke was an excellent guest host. I really enjoyed the Metagaming discussion. Luke and the two of you have some good chemistry that really made that section hum. I love the idea that so many memorable and hilarious gaming group moments come from ridiculous or obvious metagaming to get advantage- its a gamer universal. I was laughing hard through that whole section. Really great stuff!
I hope we see/hear a lot more of Luke on the D6G.
This documentary discussion with Raef was interesting to a point, but overall that section was too long and this project sounds like a train wreck. Raefs explanation of the plan and design of this effort was very confusing. I'm not sure he knows what he wants. I wish him luck and hope he follows your recommendation to do some shorter videos and put them on YouTube to test these concepts out before he goes and spends a lot of time and $$ on this. Seems like a better course of action than going whole hog documentary feature right away.
Also, Im surprised Dropzone Commander hasn't come up as a potential new hotness in your group. Sounds like it would be right up your alley. My Post-Human army is pre-ordered from the Warstore. I cant wait to see the minis & take the rules out for a spin.
Thanks for a great show. Please keep them coming.

Heh. I have ordered a large Shaltari army with case, breaking my old rule of never, ever, ever buying before trying
I agree with Sawtooth over Raef's presentation of his project. He needs to do some serious work on how to present it to people in a more focused manner.
Once, back when I was 13, I pulled of the most amazing Diplomacy stab I've ever done, seen or experienced; turning a 3rd place into a major win but completely boning my alliance partners in the process. That might have been a mistake. None of the people around that table (my childhood friends and regular gaming partners) have entirely forgotten it yet. Between the ages of 13 and 28 or so I was "the guy you can't trust, who will bone you unless you gang up on him" in any confrontation/screw your neighbout game. It was only repaired by gradually turning into The Game Facilitator of the group - trying to ensure that games are fun for everyone rather than winning. It is only in the last 7 years that I get to do fun stuff like (in Game of Thrones 1st ed) creating a 4(5?)-ship bridge from Dragonstone to Lannisport in the last turn and ensuring that everybody understands why a ship counter or two out in the ocean might be a good idea even when you really want that infantryman on the mainland, without the next 10 games being an exercise in getting ganged up on
Craig sure needs to watch our for those lawnmowers and associated activities! Get well soon...er...get well much sooner than "as soon as possible" means for your doctors.
I am in agreement with Craig over Prometheus. The movie doesn't work very well, and never gets the suspension of disbelief necessary for sci-fi movies to work going. It will, I fear, be a forgettable part of Ridley Scott's filmography. He sure does a lot of hit-and-miss lately.

Another top show. Get well soon Craig- I hope that you get your arm sorted out sooner rather than later.
Great to hear Luke on the show; it's been a highlight of my podcast listening year that World's End Radio has started pumping out regular episodes again. Given the topic of psychology and meta-gaming, it was a bit of a shame that JJ "winning is a theme" Layfield couldn't have joined you too!

The Last Chancer Who Survived

Finally finished listening.. good episode. Here's some comments for Raef about the video stuff.
The documentary is a good idea, however like what the fellas were saying, an online episodic format is probably the best way to go. DVD & Blurays are dead, or dying. Now it's downloads or better yet, streaming. Sure some folks want to buy the DVD, and it's cool that you can get them made for this amount and sell them for that amount and know your margins and all that stuff. But, in this day and age and considering the demographic for the majority of folks watching it (nerds like us) you should shoot for a more "modern" release format. Aim to have it streamed on Netflix or in the iTunes store, and you can consider getting a small number of DVDs made for the few folks that will want it.
Also, having been in the indie film biz for a while I can say that your video and especially sound must be above top notch. I don't mean flashy sound effects, just crystal clear. A viewer won't notice good quality sound and it'll just seem normal to them, but bad sound will stick out like a sore thumb and will really hurt the whole project.
Maybe you could try starting out byhave an ongoing video show using YouTube, Vimeo or whatever. Short episodes that are 5-10 minutes tops would be ideal, because people on the interweb have no attention span at all. You could do the interviews and all that stuff you had planned, but also do "how it's made" kind of episodes with behind the scenes looks at Battlefoam like you mentioned, and let it grow from there.
Kickstarter is a good idea, but I think for your project to be successful you need to get started first. Maybe make an episode or 2 first. It seems to work best as a "here's what I did so far and I need your cash to finish it" instead of "Here's my idea now I need your cash"

Raef, I'd suggest listening to Necros. He did a great job with his Kickstarter for Blackwater Gulch. I think a large part of his sucess has to do with having sunk so much time/money into the project before launching the kickstarter. He already had a rulebook, concept images and a few greens for his game, so he was able to get people interested because they knew he had already done the work to make sure the kickstarter would be used to push his work into high gear. Plus he was already giving the game away for free to anyone who was interested. If he hadn't done that I'm sure the kickstarter wouldn't have gone as well as it did.
I'd suggest going the webisode route and make a few short segments released every few weeks to show you are working towards a goal. Maybe focus on doing really quick primers on the different types of non-video gamers. Board gamer, RPGers, LARPers, wargamers, etc. Or possibly do a minidocumentary on the D6G so you could get the existing fan base on board and interested. Maybe a documentary on the rise and fall of Dakka Dakka (the store) an it's continued existance as an awesome forum.
If you can suceed with some small goals then I think you'll have better sucess getting people to hop on board for your big goal. Besides, competeing some small projects will help you get ready for the planning / production that will be involved with your big documentary.

Hey, guys, thanks for the kind words! Believe it or not, the med situation got worse before it got (is getting) better . . . you'd probably NOT be surprised how often I'm hearing people suggest I get a landscaper now . . .
Prometheus . . . I thought that was an excellent question under the spoiler tag, Ozy, AWESOME, in fact. I just don't buy that that's what we were seeing. That'd make a GREAT story, though!
As for Drop Zone Commander, it's a HUGE buzz locally with our group, and there is NO denying that the models are COMPLETELY off the hook, but I think both Russ and I are hesitant about the rules, given how little anyone has seen of them, and reading between the lines in the few blog posts and such by people who HAVE seen them . . . in fact, there's a little meta-interaction between that and the Podcast Ethics Lost Chapter we did last week . . .
Oh, and good news for Prometheus . . . I saw Snow White and the Huntsman this week . . . so I can easily guarantee that Prometheus won't be even CLOSE to the worst movie of the summer! Seriously . . . I'd rather vomit for 20 minutes if the choice was presented to me again . . .
Thanks again, guys, and now back to my 3 day Arrested Development marathon!

And buries that which once did shine.
The firm resolve falters, the sacred oath is shattered;
And let none say, "It cannot happen here".

Is it just me, or have the last few shows been really choppy? Sounds like Skype is really having issues with the guest (to be expected from time to time) but also from Craig's side. Really takes away from the enjoyment for me.

Unfortunatly long distance skype also seems to impact local skype call quality, so if we have an over seas 3C sometimes that is a problem.
That said, I've taken steps recently to improve our skype bandwidth which should help in the future.
