Subject: What is the best way to play a Ork army?
|
 |
Stalwart Dark Angels Space Marine
Somewhere dark, cold and scary (A.K.A my mind)
|
I need help, When I play orks I often get beaten (and by often I mean always).
I've tried a green tide army, but my troops just get chewed up by enemy fire.
I've tried a Dakka army, but the weak AV of my looted wagons means they get destroyed very quickly.
I'm trying a speed freeks army.
Any suggestions?
For all the people who have read my other threads I apologies for any spelling mistakes (past, present and future) and for any offence I have caused (unless you deserved it) and I'd not just whining this time!

Bad time to ask.
With 6th just dropping, lots will change, so any advice we could have given you a week ago will be broken and wrong tomorrow.
Wait a week or two and ask again.
That said, you will STILL never go wrong with moar shoota boyz, and battle wagons w/ deff rollas.
That much has NOT changed.

There are lots of ways to run orks, but they'll probably change come tomorrow (6th edition and it's many alterations).
1) Speed Freeks - This is #1 because this is what I use. You load up boyz in battlewagons and trukks and run them straight at the enemy while warbuggies and deffkoptas are zooming around. Battlewagons take deff rollas and trukks take reinforced rams which allow for plenty of tank shock awesomeness.
2) Kan Wall - This consists of 9 Killa Kanz marching up the board while being covered by a Kustom Force Field and the boyz and the rest of the toyz following behind. Kanz also have the bad tendency to make people not want to play you anymore... NOTE: If you choose to run a Kan Wall, NEVER mix weapons in a kan squad!
3) Da Green Tide - Not necessarily effective do to the amount of anti-horde out there and the sheer mass of boyz is hard to control. Often this list is headed by Ghazghkull Thraka. NOTE: This list can have even more trouble dealing with vehicles than the other Ork lists.
4) Shooty Orks - I stuck this one last not because it's bad, but it can be if it's not done properly. The philosophy is simple, lots of Orks = lots of dakka. This requires lots of lootas, shoota boyz, and good use of cover. Looted Wagons can do quite well here (especialy with a Boomgun), but they are very fragile.

Best advice for Orks: have a sense of humor. So many random effects in the army, its good of you can laugh. Especially when half the time the laughing is because of the carnage...

With Orks there is no 'One List To Rule Them All', sometimes it comes right down to who the better player is and sometimes its rock paper scissors.
One player tried to use the Can Wall on me in a tourney so I put my tyranid monsterous creatures (old nid dex where MC's were more effective) out front and tore through his cans like a wet paper bag and chewed up the tasty meaty center.
It comes down to knowing how to put an army togeather, knowing how to use that army's strengths against your opponents weaknesses and preying to the dice gods that they support your plans for victory.

With Orks, as with Nids and their gaunts/ MC's, you just have to accept that your Boyz and vehicles will die in droves. KP missions are a pain because of this..
Flipside is that everything is cheap and cheerful. You can field OBSCENE amounts of stuff at equivilent points to other armies. Some of it will get through

While i cant offer any advice on the construction of the ork army i can offer advice on your tatics since i seem to be the one that mows you down the most, cover, scenery and a proper board that isnt 3x5, also (i try but we never have time) go for objective games rather than a meat grinder, there more fun just seem to take longer to do (still 5ed players) as for your boys, dont clump them into 1 sqaud, while the mob rule works well its also your major dissadvantage since everything fires at it your going to be loosing a lot of boys in a very short amount of time, now if it was several smaller squads of boys it would be different since you will be spread out, you should imo (and ive told you this twice last week) have 3-4 sqauds of boys, especially if your going agaisnt a gaurd and tau firing line, very few tatics are required! sure you will loose a few more to running away, use your specialist squads carefully, your tank busters are deadly but you run them in the open where honeslty i think you should be running them with a transport (dont they get the scout USR?), keep looters to cover and run a big mek with a CFF to give your boys that much needed coversave as for your weird boy, (i dont know if anyone else would agree with me on this,) should be taken in conjunction with a squad of nobs to give him that extra survivability getting to the target on a side note, you have no freaking idea how annoying your bloody bikers and copters are! so (im going to hate my self for this) id recommend going for a speek freaks build because honestly, there brutal, and when fighting your brothers marines and gaurd or my csm guard and tau its your best advantage, as for shivs DE nidsi have no idea, but the advantages i put above should help you with his crons as well
