Great, ANOTHER kickstarter

This one is trying to bring back Mage Knight, in the form of a tactical video game. At the same time though, mage knight figures are also gonna be made. At 700k Goal though, thats a pretty tall order!

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/673464163/mage-knight-revenge?ref=category

For many miniature gamers, Mage Knight was the product that got them into wargaming. Not only was it WizKids’ first product, it was the most ambitious launch in the history of the hobby. After a seven-year absence, we’re bringing it back!

The initial launch features at least three of the fan favorite factions from the original Mage Knight in a digital game. Simultaneously, as a Kickstarter exclusive, we’re releasing several of the characters from each faction as physical figures with stats playable using both original Mage Knight and modern HeroClix rules.

As a bonus, WizKids Games has agreed to bring back the original Mage Knight physical game based on response to this Kickstarter.

So read the details below, pick your favorite reward tier, and stay tuned for updates. It’s going to be an exciting launch!

Mage Knight Revenge is a tactical battles game where you’ll maneuver forces of diverse fantastic soldiers against opposing squads of mystical foes—that’s right, we’re bringing your favorite tabletop game to the online world!

Using WizKids’ Clix bases, each character on the field changes in stats and powers as it takes damage, giving you lots of new options as each battle progresses. Each battle is tied together by a strategic world map where you maneuver your forces to take and hold territory, and to accomplish story objectives. As you win battles, your figures will gain experience, level up to better dials, and eventually have options to upgrade into new career paths.

The initial game launch will be for Web and mobile, with support for additional platforms potentially added based on stretch goals in this Kickstarter.
CONCEPT ARTCONCEPT ART

Nearly four centuries ago, Grand-Magus Tezla was the first to learn the magics of both life and death—elementalism and necromancy—a feat once thought impossible. He went on to other great feats: inventing technomancy, making cities fly, and unifying the diverse and fractious lands under the Empire of Atlantis.

But such powerful unifying figures tend to cause even greater strife when they die. Despite extending his life for nearly 300 years with his magic, Tezla eventually fell to old age. The components of his empire immediately began to tear themselves back into factions, several claiming to have the sole mandate of the fallen lord, which war to this day.

We’re MFV: the developers who brought you HeroClix Online and introduced the upcoming HeroClix TabApp game for iPad... and we’re ready to bring Mage Knight to the digital realm!

As the sister company to WizKids, we’re responsible for all of their digital initiatives. But we’ve also produced diverse titles like The Borgias Social Game, and Thunderstone for Facebook, Dexter: the Game for iOS and PC, and the MMO Fallen Earth. In short, we’re a small game company with robust experience in online and iOS games, with a specific focus on transliterating miniatures and other collectable games to a video game format.

In addition to MFV’s large creative and technical staff with years of experience with WizKids’ Clix-based properties, we also have the full backing of WizKids itself. This means deep access to the accumulated lore and production background for Mage Knight, and exclusive physical product support. It also means we’re involving as many of the original creative minds behind Mage Knight as possible to present an authentic return to the setting and game.

Launching a highly polished video game and a miniatures line is a huge commitment, and Kickstarter allows us to accurately gauge your interest. More importantly, it provides us a forum to communicate directly with you, the fans, from the very beginning. We’re very excited to have you as part of this process early on, and you should expect questions and polls during the Kickstarter about things like favorite factions, key game rules, and other features.

In short, Kickstarter is about giving us the tools to produce exactly the game that you want.

In addition to the self-explanatory rewards you see over on the right, we’d like to talk a little more about some of the coolest things we’re offering.

First up, just for the Kickstarter, WizKids is producing a limited run of Mage Knight figures. These will be produced from the digital sculpts made for the game and they'll have swappable dials so you can play them according to HeroClix modern or Classic Mage knight rules. The starter set features six figures (two factions of three each) that can form the core of a force. The ten figures in the boosters will round out the factions for higher value or more varied games, and even introduce a few surprises. Even if you see these sculpts again later, each of the figures from the Kickstarter is a limited edition with unique stats. This Kickstarter is the only guaranteed place to get them.

At the highest tiers, we’re offering you the ability to customize characters in the game. All of these tiers allow you to name a character: give it your own name or choose the name of one of your personal characters that you want to become ensconced in the Mage Knight setting. You can even get a 3D-printed, hand-painted figure of your character to show off (and if it’s not one we use in the physical set, you may have the only physical copy of it in the world!). Go even higher, and we’ll have our art department base the character’s appearance on you and let you collaborate with the design team on the character’s in-game stats. You pick the very highest tier and you’ll even get to do that face to face with the dev team as you visit our studios!

We’re excited to bring Mage Knight to the digital realm and with your support, we can make this happen! Keep an eye out for updates from the team and be sure to drop us a line in the comments section and tell us what you think!

Thank you for your support and rock on!

$700,000?! I don't see a chance in HELL of this thing going off when that's the initial goal. There's just no way. Zombiecide, Ogre, and now Sedition Wars have made that much, but only by starting low and having amazing stretch goals and options to entice people to keep pledging and upping their current pledges.

It looks neat enough, the figs look much better than the original sets and the figs have always been a very interesting take on traditional fantasy. I mostly passed on Mage Knight but I know a lot of people that got into gaming because of it, and the limited run board game got some fantastic reviews. I'd love to see it come back, but I just don't see it happening on this KS.

Yeah, that's a pretty big and unrealistic goal. Looks like Mage Knight won't be coming back anytime soon, lol...

I don't see my precious Black Powder Rebels anywhere in there so I'm not paying up If I were them, I'd go for a less lofty goal and just finance a video game. I don't really know how interested the market is in clix games as so many of them have died out after the initial excitement and burnout of them. I did love Mage Knight back in the day, but I've moved on to bigger and better things and don't have much desire to go back to clix gaming on the tabletop. I'd probably pick up a videogame though.

They are flogging this on the main HeroClix board, but I have to agree; $700,000 as the initial funding goal? Whoa, either they know there is a lot of pent up demand, or they are a little crazy.

In support of the latter contention, all of the backer rewards are digital until the $90 teir (and then it's a tee shirt...). To actually get miniatures (which, let's remember, was what Mage Knight was, a CMG) you need to back to the tune of $170! By the by, for those that ever doubt what a deal people get with things like Sedition Wars (97 minis at $100), for $170 you get a poster, a shirt and a 6 piece starter plus 2 "boosters". No info on the number of figs in the boosters (HeroClix right now has single fig boosters and 5 figure boosters).

I find the whole thing very odd, as right now HeroClix (Wizkids, that is) is throwing product out in every direction and seems to be doing fine. I simply don't understand why there is a need for a Kickstarter for this.

Isn't WizKids part of Wizards of the Coast which is owned by Hasbro? Or do I have my game company genealogy mixed up?

And yes, Hasbro have as much right to run a Kickstarter as a small operation like McVey or Mantic or SJG. They just won't be getting my money.

As a die hard Heroclix player for the past 10 years. I can tell you this is a VERY dumb plan.
The company that wants to make this are the same guys who make the HCO (Heroclix Online). HCO is not good.
Not good by a longshot in comparison to the tabletop version.

I would not read to much into this. It won't get very far. Most of the HC players are not "buying" into the notion of giving this company money when it, for all intents and purposes works "for" Wizkids (but not directly for NECA, which owns Wizkids).

If Mage Knight wanted to come back, Wizkids would make it so. I think WK knows exactly how people will act and is simply saying to MFD ( iirc), "If you guys think this will fly, it's gonna be on your own dime!"

700K is WAY too much to be asking for off the break. It's not gonna happen...

Gah, what's the point?

They'll only release it, add 3-4 expansions then kill it off again.

Wizkids have never been interested in making a good game, only in selling collectible sweatshop-painted plastic to addicted teens, before scrapping the whole range and re-releasing again a few years down the line.

I might as well just buy pony toys, at least those hold on to their resale value. It's quite hard to *give away* old Mage Knight stuff.

I don't know much (anything!) about most of those collectable minis games - they came out during one of my many lulls in the hobby. I had always thought that WizKids was Wizards of the Coast's "younger ages" subsidiary.

I've just had a look on Wiki:

WizKids, Inc. is an American New Jersey-based company that first made its mark in the game industry producing collectible miniatures wargames. WizKids was purchased by and is a subsidiary of National Entertainment Collectibles Association. The company was founded in 2000 by Jordan Weisman, a veteran of the game company FASA.[1] It was purchased by sports-card manufacturer Topps, Inc. in 2003.[2] (Topps was, in turn, acquired by Michael Eisner's Tornante Company and Madison Dearborn Partners in 2007.)
Topps shut down Wizkids operation in November 2008 giving the economic downturn as the reason for the closure.[3] The company was then purchased in September 2009 by NECA.[4]

So it's not pledging money to Hasbro - it's pledging money to NECA. Not a huge toy company, merely a large toy company.

The way they have the Kickstarter set up is insane. Every level from $150 up is limited. The $170 goal that is the first one to include figures is thirty away from selling out and their current total is a bit over $6800. The total of all limited pledges is only $652,500. Unless they plan on adding levels or stretch goals, I can't see that many people being PSYCHED for posters and forum avatars.

Dammit, now I really want to see a Necromunda Online.

That was Pre-buyout days.

They got sold, and then were eaten.

That's ok though, you can still pay $300 to get all the benefits of the $170 tier...and an art print. Well, 200 of you can, then they run out of prints, I guess? Or they run out minis?
Hasn't it become pretty clear to even the casual KS observer that you need to establish a sweet spot pledge level that drives most of your income?
Let's see how well this mess does over the next month.

Mageknight introduced me to mini gaming but after their betrayal when the stopped supporting the game that brought them all the other games, I will not support anything Wizkids related. The unrealistic goal of $700K just shows that they continue to be the greedy company they proved themselves to be.

Also, are we looking at a strech goal added once they reach $1 million? I bet everyone will look forward to that. Yay, just $300K more to get that extra booster pack.

I hated (and I suppose still do hate) the mageknight miniature game with all of my soul (bad sculpts, bad paint jobs, boring rule set, crazy broken figures)...

With that being said, Wizkids has put out some bang-up board games in the recent past, and have gone a long way in earning my forgiveness.

That being said, there is just no way I can justify supporting this...but I wish the company well in other ventures.

Well, the core problem was Jordan Weissman. He pulls the same trick over and over (Arcane Legions anyone?). Wizkids now has a heavy luggage to lug around.

If MK was relaunched, I might earn a fortune since I've been buying really cheap Mage Knight toys (and repainting most of them. They look decent-ish when painted nicely) for Dungeons and Dragons games: it IS the cheapest source of Fantasy miniatures for years and a great way of having lots of assorted figures.

So pledge on guys, and make me rich (maybe?)!

Kidding aside, 700k is too darn much.

Ugh, not another video game trying to grab up mini gamers. If I wanted to play video games, I would be playing video games. The idea that a game is just like a minis game, but its a video game, pisses me off. No its not. Go away, I dont play video games because I dont like video games.

I actually kinda liked Mage Knight (and Heroclix).... but not enough to want to chip in for a kickstarter for it. I think I lost interest in it after a few months.

$700,000 though... Good fething luck! That's nuts. Methinks they overestimate Mage Knight's popularity. I mean, I can see their reasoning ("Mantic raised over 350K and they're only a couple years old and super-duper niche (at least in the US)! Surely, our older, more well-known formerly popular property can do twice as well!"), but... well, I'll be utterly gobsmacked if they get anywhere close to 700K by the end of the month.

Given the problems with the "clix" rules (anyone remember the massive FAQs?) and low quality models Wizkids put out, I seriously doubt this will happen. I know I'm not going to be donating.

I do like video games, but tabletop games and video games each have their own strengths. Trying to directly make a video game into a tabletop game would require an oppressively complex ruleset, while trying to directly make a tabletop game into a video game isn't going to be as fun without the feelies to build and play with.

I feel that it could work.

Back in the day, they had a toy that interacted with the T.V. show. Think it was some sort of scifi toy. You hit them with the laser, and they added points or some sort of thing.

If they pushed the hybrid interaction angle with an ingame account, ala an MMO, you could play a game, have the figures with an interactive slate, and add in/ take away from them in thier stats.

Issues would revolve around the same sort of dumbassness that MMO's have bred since thier onset.

D and D, aside from all of it's cheese is a very good example of how they are evolving, ( or devolving) the game for a broader WOW audence.

I'm a first and second edition player through and through. Never thought much of third edition, and 4th is a completly different game, yet...

If they continue thier current trend, Wizards will eventually let you play your incomputer character in an online D and D game. They have already started building the baseboard, all they need is the rest of the stuff, and the game will eventually be a roll playing MMO for all intesive purposes.

Example-

http://www.wizards.com/dnd/

http://www.wizards.com/dnd/Tool.aspx?x=dnd/4new/tool/characterbuilder

http://www.wizards.com/dnd/Tool.aspx?x=dnd/4new/tool/compendium

http://www.wizards.com/dnd/Tool.aspx?x=dnd/4new/tool/adventuretools

http://www.wizards.com/dnd/Tool.aspx?x=dnd/4new/tool/dragonmagazine

and...

You basicly set up an account, and have access to myrid examples of D and D content. Your Milage May Very, but in the end- this is an interactive combination MMO, RPG.

Aaaaand, to the surprise of, well, probably no one, the Kickstarter has been cancelled.

I found the whole affair almost shockingly badly structured. A Kickstarter for a miniature based game where you needed to pledge $170 for any miniatures? Waaaaa?

Hmm found this intriguing piece of info though, it seems that Mage Knight itself may be coming back

Mage Knight Revenge has cancelled their Kickstarter campaign. However, their final update has an interesting tidbit in it, mentioning that WizKids is looking to relaunch their original flagship game.

With that said, we’re excited to announce that our sister company, WizKids Games, will be reintroducing the physical Mage Knight tabletop game. Please be sure to follow WizKids on Twitter and Facebook or online at www.wizkidsgames.com for status updates on the relaunch.
