Hiding in a dark alley with a sharp knife!
|
I just looked over a copy of the 6th edition rules that a friend purchased this morning. (I'm still going to wait for a second hand copy on ebay as I don't give GW money directly any more) Did anyone else notice the picture of a Zoat on page 198? (hint, it's the creature on the left of the zenos montage)
Now I made the mistake of getting all excited about the awful John Blanche drawing of a Space Slaan in one of the previous editions (was it fourth? I don't recall and can't be bothered to dig out my book...it's not important anyway) which turned out to be nothing. So I'll refrain doing so here. But it is cool to see a nod to the past like that in the current book.
But on the off chance they do add Zoats (which you have to admit are a cool race) back into the mix at some point, I do have 8 models on hand!

Space diplomats are a cool race? I mean, their sole role in 40k was telling people Tyranids were going to come eat them. Lay down your arms and let them eat you, or fight back and they'll still eat you.
I'm more interested in the pictures of a Barghasi (the space vampire bat on the right) and a space Slann (the toad thing).

That's late RT era fluff. The earlier material that apeared in the core rulebook had them as the shock troops of the tyranid army or serving as mercenaries in other force were they had broken tyranid control. I suspect any revival of Zoats would be more akin to the older "bad -s" role than the (admitedly) lame later incarnation.
and a space Slann (the toad thing).
Saw that one too, although I'm not100% certain that's what it was. I've got a full army sized collection of Space Slann, so that's pretty cool as well.

It mentions Squats by name in the fluff section on abhumans. I for one welcome our 2nd edition overlords.

For sure.
I knew about the Squats, I had not heard about the Zoats coming back to the fluff. The more I hear about 6th Edition, the more I like the philosophy it seems to be embracing. I mean, I understand that 40K has become a monster that can't really be controlled anymore, but the nods to its roots are pleasing. I don't think we'll see new Zoats or Squats models, but it's cool that they're being brought back to the universe as a nod to those of us who've hung around this nerdiness for longer than should be acceptable.
I so badly want to get a Zoat worked into my project log, but I'm still trying to figure out how.

Oh wow.
I did not notice that. Of course I have not actually read through the fluff sections yet. That is a nice change of events. I recall when GW went back and wrote the Squats out of previous material much akin to Stalin having purged political enemies removed from photos and banning all mention of them from their forums. At least they are admitting their existance now. That's refreshing.

Edit: I have skimmed through the fluff section twice now and can't find the rererence to Squats that was mentioned above. Is that for real, or was someone trying to be funny? What's the page number?

It's a nice reference to the past those of us who remember the old days.
That said, I'd cheerfully exchange any number of continuity nods for better-balanced, less-clumsy rules.

They've shown or mentioned alien species in the background before without them ever actually appearing in the game, so I wouldn't read too much into it.

It also mentions catgirls and mermaids as types of mutants. Honestly if you ever go to 4chan /tg/ is having a field day with the former.

Squats are mentioned as being extinct. It was quite surprising. Apparently back in the day on GW forums you'd get your post deleted and/or banned for even mentioning Squats.
There's also a drawing of various Xenos (none identified by name) and something that looks quite like a Zoat is there.
There's also something that looks a lot like the old Hrud concept art (aka space Skaven instead of the more recent Xenology concept), meaning GW may have never accepted Xenology as a whole with them.

Which was nothing to do with GW, and entirely up to the volunteer mods not wanting to be constantly dealing with the inevitable flame-fests that happened every time anyone mentioned Squats.

I'm not. Recall the Space Slaan pic in the 4th edition book? Sadly, nothing came of that. It's just a cool little tidbit for us older more traditional players.

Call me blind, but I'm still missing it. What page is that on?

No thanks.
4chan and it's related sites are the armpit of the 'web and are a nice example of everything that is wrong with today's internet "culture". "Moot" should be taken out and summarily executed for creating that place!

Heh.
Well, I'm sure that bestgore dot com, nambla dot org and stormfront dot org (it would probably be a disciplinary infraction to actually link to any of those sites, so pardon my spelling them out) all have their moments from time to time as well!
But I'm sure you agree that they are pretty messed up places that have a negative influence overall.
But I digress....blame the guy who brought up 4chan!
